I think it is just as important for Microsoft to continue to own the new browser version and ship new features [at least] regularly.
We have tried/tested FF's extensions in different configurations and it is not as happy, or bump free as it is held out to be. Many extensions and especially when one starts to load up on them, hammer FF, badly. Try it - add a mix and observe. Many, cause the browser to slow, or fail, entirely. I am sure it depends upon a lot of factors that are hard to consistently replicate, but it does suggest that people need to add extensions carefully and slowly - so one may isolate any problems one might encounter.
I do assess that it's a great idea, but I assess both FF and IE teams need to own these add-ons and extensions and more aggressively support the developers of them - even offering to improve upon them and share the up-side where it is provided.
