Allchin: Vista won’t RTM next week | |

The Microsoft countdown clock was wrong. (Yeah, maybe it's running Windows Vista and blue screened. Teehee.) Vista is not on track to be released to manufacturing on October 25, according to Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's platforms and services division. "We won't RTM (release to manufacturing) in a week," Allchin told me on October 18. "We are in pretty good shape. And there are still months before (the January 2007) launch." Allchin said Microsoft is looking at Vista across five categories right now to determine whether it's RTM-ready. | ||

Keep up the good work guys. btw - what we have coming out in Vista is technology that SHOULD have been delivered in 2004. I just don't see 5 years of development in this product. |

Vista in its current form represents 3 years of development, from reset to present.
Even without the reset, you seriously don't believe that functionality such as a new presentation layer and display driver model, new audio and networking stacks, intrensic support for transactions, and a managed replacement for the Windows API is worth that time? Besides the delay for XP SP2 and SDL integration, much time has been consumed either making changes based on feedback or waiting on the standardization of several technologies such as WS-*, .NET and XPS. |

Do you honestly believe that in 2004 they threw away what code they had written in the previous 3 years (presentation layer, networking stacks etc as you mentioned) and started fresh based on the Server 2003 branch? "Besides the delay for XP SP2 and SDL integration" You do realize that Microsoft has a lot of developers.... it's not as if the Vista developers were told to stop progress on Vista and concentrate on XP SP2 so you could get a firewall (and finally after how many years... a tiny little update to IE). |

Though most of the low-level code was retained, a lot of code at the API level and above was effectively ripped and replaced, either because of dependencies on other parts of the platform that were also in flux (e.g., .NET - Explorer and Sidebar changed at least in part due to the need to cut such dependencies) or because feedback drove significant changes in the current architecture (e.g., WinFX, WinFS, Object Spaces, "Castle"). There were also low-level platform components not present in 2003 AFAIR (e.g., "Longhorn" builds of that era still used XPDDM rather than WDDM), and I don't think the protected process architecture was in place. Other technologies have also been added such as ASLR and Workflow.
You do realize that Microsoft has a lot of developers.... it's not as if the Vista developers were told to stop progress on Vista and concentrate on XP SP2 so you could get a firewall (and finally after how many years... a tiny little update to IE). You're exaggerating way too much by characterizing XP SP2 as just a Firewall/IE update, and XP shipped with a firewall at RTM. Most people just didn't bother to turn it on, which is why it is on by default in SP2. There were changes to the security model in various areas, DEP was introduced, and system components were recompiled using new compiler technologies to help mitigate exploitation of common code defects. Microsoft stopped all development for two months to provide security training and code review. After development resumed, many developers were indeed pulled off "Longhorn" to work on XP SP2. #6 So you agree that they didn't start from scratch. And yes I was having a go at XP SP2, not because it wasn't a worthwhile upgrade (aside from IE) but because you made it seem as if there was little to no work done on Vista whilst XP SP2 was being worked on which I very highly doubt.

Yes some of the more ambitious ideas (.NET API for the OS) would have been put aside for potential future use but the rest of the code would most definitely have been kept! |
