#5, OK, cool, but what is behind that? Is it a decision based upon a wider view, or specific tests? That is my curiosity. I agree, just blowing Vista, or any OS on would be unwise; however, after having run tests for your company, or the companies you support, I reason one would make such a decision based upon results.
I also mean, that such studies have to include a solid effort to determine benefits and risks - for example, to take advantage of more unified communications, and better collaboration in a deployment parallel to select new servers, or applications you are building.
I am not sure how home users will behave. Despite selling into the SMB market, which also includes a lot of custom systems for homes [a lot, relative our small numbers of people], I have to agree, general knowledge of Windows Vista is scant - most of my customers who buy for their homes have not mentioned Vista in any way - it is like they are totally unaware of it.
The same may be said for Intel's new "Core" architecture and its shift to C2 and now, C4.
The truth is, they don't much care about computing science - most are professionals of one type or another, and by the time they get home, they are blasted tired and busy with kids and their homes.
At the same time, they each have systems we prepare for them that they see as simple extensions to their offices - chances to work more flexible hours, or to stay at the house when the day, or traffic looks to be just too much to deal with.
It's interesting - seeing how they really do see these systems as being part of the office.
When one does mention Vista - say for children, many of our customers are so jaded - so tired of supporting kids that misused systems in the past. Many are fatigued. When one does begin to explain UAC and parental controls, then, and only then, do they seem to pick up some interest. One can go on and on about new features to support media, and it goes south - mention locking down a system from a 14 year old's influence, and suddenly Dad momentarily grows ears again. But not for long.
I think I know why... and why so much about Vista still bugs me... - it's the dumbing down of America. A lot about the Vista UX is placed deeper into the UI and further away from users - that I think was about dumbing it down.
There is so much of that going on - numb were are... as we piss away hour after hour staring into Goog-Tube [formely Youtube].... working so hard to figure out how not to xxxxxxxx - just fill in your own blanks... how not to stand up and fight wackoid terrorists.... wackoid dictators...., or how not to lean forward and do something new... it's hard and we might fail....
Man, I know what it is to be tired and sometimes sick and tired... Anyone in this industry feels that way sometimes - especially those facing customers, or fleets of enterprise users.
