#6,
Well if they do pull it and go home. Who would take up the reigns?? MS owns the products if they decide to pull out of the market they would still own the product.
They have enough cash to settle all outstanding debts and probably even give all of thier employees a nice package.
Business in America and the world would be in down cycle they have never seen before as they would have to switch all systems over to an New OS. What's out there?? Sun is at least a year away from a usable suite. Linux gnome and kde are at least 2 years away from real user usability.
Even it MS pulls it just to meet the States Decree, you are looking at a year to 2 years cycle. Programming Testing and release of 98, 98 se, ME, 2000, XP, the servers. ALL of their own software. Plus working with every vendor on the market to make sure that thier products work on the new platform.
So that is at least 2 years. of a VERY VERY expensive remedy to a problem that doesn't really exist.
I am sorry, but I used and bought Netscape when they were good. they released a lousy productin version 4, it has taken them over 4 years to release a new buggy version.
But by busting the OS into a 1000 pieces the Price of a consumer PC will Jump by leaps and bounds. Since Software is the single most expensive part of a computer. Seperate that from the OS the PC becomes more expensive.
That is one part I believe that most people don't see. or don't remember from the Dos days.
