Despite earlier claims to the contrary made by, er, Microsoft in its beta newsgroup, the registry hack that allows testers to circumvent Product Activation has been removed from the latest external build of Windows XP, 2446. It appears that Microsoft initially posted the wrong rev of the release notes, and our informants tell us testers are now having heated arguments about withdrawal, editing and reposting of newsgroup messages. John Gray of Microsoft yesterday confirmed to testers that the regkey allowing product activation to be switched off was no longer active, so as of this build of XP Microsoft's security systems go into live battle testing. Microsoft did say in the notes for the previous external build, 2428, that the regkey wouldn't be available in future builds, but despite this the actual decision to remove it from 2446 must have been relatively recent. | ||

| Of course not, because that's not true. Product activation keys are designed to prevent one thing; piracy. And they have every right to implement them. I applaud Microsoft's move on this point. If you reinstall your computer, you have to contact Microsoft for a new key. That's legitimate. It's annoying, but legitimate. If people would follow the LAW and not pirate MS products, they wouldn't have to do this. It's not Microsoft who is to blame; it's the pirates who have STOLEN *BILLIONS* of dollars in Microsoft product who have made this action neccesary. |

| If you're really, truely, worried about privacy, then you should've killed yourself long ago. The government, corporations (namely financial corps) have been successfully matching anonymous data (spending habits, credit card usage, etc) to individuals and targeting them for advertising every day for the past several years. Whenever you use your credit card anywhere, it's being logged and recorded and matched against a 100 other purchases to form a pattern so that retailers can send you advertisements that matter to you. All in all, it's not a bad thing. I get less, more targeted junk mail as a result, so it ain't bad. |
