Windows Senior VP Valentine Heads to Amazon.com | |

On August 1, Microsoft officials said that Brian Valentine, long-time senior vice president in charge of Microsoft's Core Operating System Division, was planning to move to another part of the company after Windows Vista went to manufacturing. Instead, Valentine has decided to leave the company and join Amazon.com. On September 5, Microsoft announced that 19-year veteran Valentine was moving around mid-September to a Senior Vice President post at Amazon. For now, Valentine's team will be reporting to Platforms and Services Co-President Jim Allchin. Once Vista RTMs, Jon DeVaan will take over, as planned, as the new head of Windows and Windows Live development. | ||

I hardly think it's Valentine running away "as fast as he can." He was already "planning to move to another part of the company" -- and I'd bet that it wasn't his idea, if you get what I mean.
People have called for accountability, for heads to roll after Longhorn's taken so long to ship. And now it's happening. |

This doesn't seem like a huge surprise, but it's still a rather big announcement.
But Latch, what is it about hating Microsoft that you enjoy so much? Seriously--I'm really curious what motivates some people to think that way. |

crappy, insecure products indifference to consumers total lack of business ethics flouting of laws the world over gross harm to IT ecosystem in order to maintain monopoly impeding global standards ... I could go on. And I've said before that I don't hate them. I don't *hate* anything. I do dislike them and refuse to buy their products or services. I don't enjoy disliking them. I wish I could snap my fingers and turn MS into a good corporate citizen, but it will never happen. Another good question would be, with all the documented baggage of their shenanigans over the past 20 years, why do you love them so much? |

Sorry--I forgot to follow this post. I wouldn't say I "love" Microsoft, but I think they've been responsible for the ubiquity of powerful computers "on every desk" more than anyone. And for the most part, I think they build quite solid products--much more than that of most of software from other vendors I've had experience using over the years. I'd have to take issue with each one of your points as well.
Insecure? Before yes, but they're taking it seriously now, more than the majority of other companies in the industry. Indifference to customers? I think they are quite responsive to customer requests, and the development of their products reflects that. Lack of business ethics? In the past, they played hardball, and now they're paying the price (the reputation has cost them more than any fines)... but it's a different company than a few years ago. This is not an excuse, but don't think that their competition are all models of good ethics. Flouting of laws? You mean with the EU? That case is much more a political mess than an exercise in justice. Even the US case was not without controversy over fairness as you look at the comments made by the judiciary. Gross harm to the IT ecosystem? Nonsense. For example, the fact that Windows has been the most popular OS in the world didn't keep Novell from becoming the #1 server OS. Novell caused its own downfall. A huge part of the IT ecosystem was created by Microsoft. Impeding global standards? Name one company that no one could accuse of that! Take 802.11n for instance. Who's holding that process up? It all depends on your point of view--some think a company is impeding the standard, while others think the company has the best interests of the standard in mind. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. Anyhow... I have a feeling we'll just have to agree to disagree. |
