If you are an anti-Microsft FUDster that believes there are hidden API's that always give Microsft an advantage, then the answer is an unqualified yes.
If you believe that version 3 of Microsoft software is where they overtake and surpass the competition, then the answer is Yes when Microsoft Virtualization ships (VS 2005, and VS 2005 R2 are version 1 and 2). Otherwise the answer is maybe -- if they want it to be better. Many Microsoft customers with perceived insurmountable leads have blown it in the past. | Is it currently as good as VMWare server? Not if you want to install it on W2K. Will it ever be as good is an impossible question to answer objectively as the question is a loaded one in the vein of "when did you stop beating your wife?". |

The just announced SP1 beta looks very cool for these 2 reasons:
• Volume Shadow Service, which provides customers with improved support for backup and disaster recovery. Instead of scheduling downtime for backing up each virtual machine individually, customers will now be able to take snapshot backups of physical machines that will in turn take snapshots of all the virtual machines on that physical host. • Offline VHD mounting now enables customers to view and manipulate the files in a VHD without having to start the virtual machine. This will now enable administrators to easily deploy scripts and perform virus scans across VHDs without having to start each virtual machine. |

You installed W2K on a server capable of running VMware or Virtual Server? Yes, we still have W2K running. But on servers with Dual 1.1ghz and 512MB of ram. Not exactly VMware or VMware server or VS candidates. Lack of W2K support is meaningless to me. Especially when the W2K3R2 Enterprise License allows 4 W2K3R2 Enterprise VM's of any kind for free.
