Dell, AMD expected to expand chip pact | |

Dell, the last of the big four server makers to accept Advanced Micro Devices' chips into its product portfolio, is expected to announce Thursday that it's expanding its partnership with the chipmaker to include new AMD-based servers, desktops and laptops. Dell already scrapped its longtime Intel exclusivity in May, committing to sell a four-processor server with AMD's Opteron by the end of the year. That's a relatively high-end niche for the Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker, but sources familiar with the company's plans expect a broader alliance to be announced Thursday afternoon, when Dell reports quarterly financial results. | ||

Oh I don't know about this one....
Dell's stock price has taken a 40%+ deval over such a short time. And with Intel's Core architechture being not only better than what AMD has to offer right now but more capable of more diverse deployment across is entire line - latops to servers, I don't know how Dell's investors will react to this over the long haul - yes some will short it [hence a slight bump of late], but over the next six months....? Managing two architectures across such a large set of builds... analysts will not reward this as the purley technical likely will. |

Well, there are a couple of problems with the Intel Core architecture right now.
1) Its hard to find. Sure, there are a decent number of E6300's available, but the E6700's which have 4MB of cache are a lot harder to buy. Intel has only converted 5% of its production to Desktop Core chips. 2) The Core architecture for servers only supports 2 sockets. AMD owns the 4 Socket and up market in terms of price/performance and if you want to spend more, energy usage. All of that will change over time, but right now buying anything less than a higher end AMD like the 5000+ or an Intel non-CORE chip is a waste of money, but the market is awash in useless enrgy hungry Pentium 4 architecture chips. My company bought 2 no-name brand 2 socket (4 core) AMD servers with 8GB of ram for half the price of Dells with the same specs a few months ago, and we are normally a Dell shop. I'll give you an example of Core "availability" from an article on TechReport:

The situation has now stabilized somewhat, but street prices are still a far cry from those in Intel's official price list (PDF). Luckily, our price search engine can give us a fairly good idea of which online retailers feel like parting with their Core 2 Duos for the smallest amount of cash possible. The entry-level Core 2 Duo E6300 seems to be the least inflated at the moment. ZipZoomFly is currently selling the chip for $193, just $10 higher than Intel's list price. Meanwhile, Monarch Computer has the Core 2 Duo E6400 in stock $17.99 above Intel's price at $241.99. Outlook above $300 is less rosy: the cheapest Core 2 Duo E6600 we could find was at Newegg for $369.99—nearly $54 above Intel's price—and markups just keep getting worse from there." If you are Dell, and you can sell AMD X2 3800+ and above instead of regular P4's and Celerons, you will make your customer happy.
