This e-mail was sent to a select number of users for signup "The Microsoft Home Networking Team would like to invite you to submit a nomination to participate in their upcoming beta program for Wireless Home Networking. The focus of the program will be on broadband internet connection sharing. A PC with an existing broadband connection is required for participation, along with at least one additional computer. The beta hardware and software will enable this second computer to share the broadband connection with the computer that is already connected to the broadband modem. The beta program will begin in early April and end in late April or early May. We are seeking participants who will be able to provide good feedback during that time frame." | ||

| What are they beta testing anyway? Wireless Networking already exists, already works. Does XP have crummy support (or worse, no support) for Wi-Fi, I don't get it? |

#5, no. All running perfectly here with all the updates.
#9, Microsoft doesn't have Wireless Networking Hardware. That is what they are beta testing. #7, What are you talking about? What does a home wireless network have to do with MSN? Broadband testing has nothing to do with MSN. Any broadband provider for this beta. #8, Looking at the hardware that they offer. #6, you are correct. It was not made public. |

KvalCom, thanks, now that's interesting. The Reg article on the same was questioning whether it was their own hardware (Xbox-style) or if they were building kit for 3rd parties.
The next question is why do I care if my antennae or receiver are from MS? |

Why do you care? You might not. Why would you buy your keyboard or mouse from MS instead of Prologic? Why would you buy your joystick from MS instead of Company A? MS wants to continue to offer hardware, and so they are looking at the wireless network, pocketpc's, xbox...etc. |

I'm not trying to be down on it, I'm just trying to understand. Do 3rd party antennaes and receivers tend to have problems with XP? Can MS offer better integration? Am I going to buy a HP/Compaq/Dell machine and then want to buy MS ant/recvr separately? etc? That's all, just curious.
(I'm coming from the Apple world where everything comes antennae-ready, Apple sells the wireless cards and base station, and it all works seamlessly with the software so I was asking if there are integration problems and if there is any additional incentive to buy from MS instead of 3Com, for example.) |

I can't answer your question with 100% confidence. But yes, Microsoft is looking at making the integration tighter than what is available with 3rd party wireless networks. It will just be another selling point, with the Windows XP/.Net Certified logo and seemless integration. I don't know much, but I have been contacted about the program, and I am unable, under NDA, to release any information. |
