Equity companies -v Lifestyle companies
I just can't see a man like Mr. Gates much liking the former - so he get's to watch how history will provide its initial treatment of him as he works on a version of the latter. No bad... not bad at all and so very rare. He set into motion and created that which is now inevitable [global virtualization and dynamic knowledge networks of any size and simultaneity]. He realized that all challenges may be solved by software - the kind between one's ears...where computer software simply reflects a portion of this as an aggregate expression of human thought - individual and collective. He must be so very practical in so many ways - realizing that to liquidate his fortune as he will do - trying to make the world a better place - will take a lot of time and personal energy. We're witnessing a man keep his word - to himself. He is so very rare. |

I have to give the guy credit. Many people in his position would just retire early and spend their days on the golf course, and sleeping with Paris Hilton. Bill Gates will instead spend his time spending his incredible wealth throught the B & M Gates Foundation, which he has already done a lot of good through.
However, given that he is retaining his Chairman of the Board position, he only seems to be giving up the role of Chief Software Architect. I am curious as to what that position entails that requires a two year transition time. That seems a bit excessive to me. But, since his job was custom created specifically for him at the time, by him, I don't claim to have a complete grasp on what his job entails on a day to day basis. Which is why I am curious about the time span. The only thing I can think of at this time is that his successor has not been found yet, and part of the two years is to find said successor. |

| Hopefully, Lotus products' horrific UIs will not be allowed to infiltrate into MS products. Ozzie needs to be kept on a tight leash until we see his vision... two years may not be enough. |

Maybe he's depressed that Scoble left. ;)
People say a lot of things about him, but it's hard to argue with his record of philanthropy. And he approaches the problems his foundation addresses with the same shrewdness and tenacity that characterized Microsoft--this isn't just a figurehead board position at a feel-good charity. Many people make fun of him or even get angry at him for being the world's wealthiest person, but I've never seen him flaunt his money or seem to be possessed by it. Some talk about this move as though it's sort of a sacrifice--and there's an element of that. But I think he's incredibly lucky. He's in (and has been in) a position to make a huge, huge difference in the world in ways that are substantial and real among the wealthy AND the poor. And he's seizing that position. There are exceptionally few people in the world that can say that. I can't think of any other CEOs (or company heads) offhand that even seem very interested. |
