Microsoft discloses that the WGA tool phones home daily | |

If you happen to be running the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool on your PC, then you have probably already made the assumption that the tool phones home periodically, but are you aware that it makes calls to Microsoft everyday? Yes, it's true, the WGA tool pings Microsoft's servers everyday. Until now, Microsoft ceased to reveal that nasty little tidbit, and now it claims that it needs to do a better job in letting users know when its software feels the need to check in with HQ. The question is why does the WGA need to run daily? Microsoft's answer is suspect at best. | ||

| I was starting to wonder what was going on. It's been a few days now since MS has done something stupid, so here they are to make up for it. Yep, just to make sure your Windows isn't pirated, MS needs the WGA tool to phone home every single day. Nice. |

My beef with the WGA is what appears to be an endless stream of updates and reinstallations of the damn thing. Microsoft Updates had yet another version of it for one of my systems today and it took abot 20 minutes to find and install a manual copy of the new version and a restart before WLV One Care would shut up. Whomever named this sort of thing Nag-Ware nailed it dead on.
I don't mind validating Windows, or Office - I thought activation did this... but this BS is ridiculous and it truly only hurts valid owners. I'd like to take a ten penny nail and manually tatoo a copy of every valid product key I have paid Microsoft for to the ass of the idiot who came up with this one - when I run out of room, I'll swicth colors and start all over again. We can all hope for a truly viable alternative to Windows, but I fear they'd end up doing the same sort of crap. |
