Just ask Novell, which more or less reinvented itself thanks to the open-source fairy dust provided by its acquistion of the Suse Linux distribution. But now some of the disruptive energy seems to have dropped away, as attention turns increasingly to the collaborative potential of the Web. Google and the buzzword du jour, Web 2.0, are capturing the attention once enjoyed by the struggle between Linux, Windows and Unix. As I've mentioned here before, consumers want what they are comfortable with as an OS, Windows. Linux scares the average consumer. Windows Vista is and will be desired by the same folks on their next PC, because it will run the programs they are used to.
In the Enterprise things are different. One can expect MS to be terribly agressive there. That's where the real competition still is. |

Consurmers just want to do "stuff" with their computers- they dont care how or why it does it- it just has to do it easy enough to make them want to keep on doing stuff with their computers.
And with all that the open source has to offer talent wise, what have they produced that the has been significantly better in an end-to-end solution/platform that Microsoft hasnt? Where is the total Linux solution to anything- it doesnt exist becuase there is no total Linux. Linux is a bunch of code that does some stuff, but only if all your other stuff was hand built and configured to run on a particular system. And in the end everyone knows that. You can only make promises for so long before some one wants results |

I for one would like some big company to buy a Linux distro, IBM perhaps; someone, anyone who could do for Linux what MS did for the basic IBM PC (standardize peripheral drivers), and then make it a viable business alternative to Windows.
That company would necessarily have to have an "Office" like product which shipped with the OS. It would not have to be fancy and it would need to run on barebone computer configurations...fast. It would also need to cost about $50. If someone did this particularly with an eye to totally locking down the OS to the enduser so that the cubicle user couldn't surf the web with impunity and screw up the company machines with all manner of wastefull software including freakin' Google videos. It would be an instant hit and completely displace Windows from the business market. I would purchase it in a second and only install Windows on a few machines that needed some specialty software. Hey, just think, an office computer that is a business machine. No IM, videos, iTunes or any other bull on the office computers. My employees would have to go to the bathroom 25 times a day as a break from work… no wait they do that already. Sign… One can only hope. |

Way too expensive. Windows hasn't really increased in price that much, and even Apple can't really compete on the same level. Apple OS customers get charged $129 every couple of years for their upgrades, and that was on pretty much standard hardware. Windows has to accommodate a huge hardware base...and run smoothly. Don't know if there's a company around that can replicate what windows does and still charge a reasonable fee for the OS. Heck, MS just ended support for 98se! Seven years for $100 ain't bad. It will probably take MS to make major blunders on its own for a 'real' competitor to make inroads on the desktop OS market. This post was edited by mirt on Friday, June 02, 2006 at 06:30. |

| hey oldog, Working in front of a computer 8-9 hours a day can be a little taxing. Some daily diversions whether it be a video, a few headlines, or chatting with our co-workers can do wonders to release the tension. I work for a fortune 500 company that installs iTunes on our machines. They realize that stress reduces productivity, but I guess you realize that too since you're logged in here, commenting on stories... |

#3 You could try the "Shared Computer Toolkit" and lock things down to a returnable state if you don't want to learn how to lock down a PC with policies:
