Microsoft Corp. told a European Union court Monday that regulators had completely misunderstood thriving competition in the software market in issuing a landmark antitrust ruling against the giant U.S. company. But an internal Microsoft memo presented by a coalition of critical companies suggested founder Bill Gates was told that a strategy used to crush the rival Netscape browser could also take down the leader in streaming media, RealNetworks Inc.'s RealPlayer. | ||

Netscape ... the company that started out by stealing intellectual property from a University (Microsoft licensed it) and decided to give away its product for free to anyone who wanted to download it? That Netscape? The company that wined and snivelled because Microsoft gave away their browser too?

And, just to be clear. I actually downloaded and used Mosaic at the time. The business I worked for actually bought and paid for a copy of Spyglass. And I downloaded and never paid for Netscape 1,2,3,4,5 and IE 1,2,3,4,5,6.

At the beginning I also tried Mosaic, Netscape, IE, and other browsers (all available for free download, and several came with my new P133). Netscape and IE quickly became the two I used most. I liked IE for its speed and stability, though used Netscape to access some sites that for various reasons were Netscape-only or didn't have none-frames versions of their sites (IE didn't support frames until version 3 IIRC [borderless frames were cool]). After IE 3 came out, I used it as my primary browser. I still checked out Netscape for a while but didn't find it had anything I needed that IE 3 didn't have, and IE still proved to be a more stable browser. With IE 3, I eventually dropped Netscape and other browsers entirely and haven't needed to go to another browser vendor since then. | netscape announced its incompetence the minute it put in that absolutely horrible "waiting for java to load" in the splash screen sequence. From that moment on, it was all downhill... including their BUYING of a server product line (with fellow incompetent Sun, right?). Netscape died from a series of missteps on their part. And MSFT was there to pick up the pieces. |

Let's get "REAL." "Real" is a miserable product. It installs crap without asking and then you have to spend 20 minutes in its "preferences" setting it up so that it is less obnoxious then it otherwise would be. Meanwhile, Media Player has gotten better and better with each version and is completely unobtrusive.
This just in - due to a distinct lack of profits and a stock price that has hovered in the low teens since 2002 - Scott McNealy stepped down as CEO of Sun Microsystems. I guess Scott couldn't wring anymore jackpot justice lawsuits out of Micorosft and the board told him it was time to go. Nevertheless, unable to completely rid themselves of this guy, the shareholders are still stuck with him as their chairman. Anybody bought an Intel or AMD based Sun system lately - lol! |
