Netscape ... the company that started out by stealing intellectual property from a University (Microsoft licensed it) and decided to give away its product for free to anyone who wanted to download it? That Netscape? The company that wined and snivelled because Microsoft gave away their browser too?

"Mosaic was initially developed for Unix computers; however, a few months later it became cross-platform when Aleks Totic developed a version for the Macintosh. Mosaic was distributed as free, readily available software. In 1994 NCSA assigned the commercial rights to Mosaic to Spyglass, Inc., who eventually licensed the technology to other companies for use in their own browser development. By 1997 NCSA had ceased developing Mosaic, and Andreessen had moved on to his own company: Netscape.
Andreessen founded Netscape in 1994 by with Jim Clark (who also founded another little company, Silicon Graphics Inc.). To the University of Illinois’ intense dissatisfaction, Andreessen brought with him key developers from the Mosaic team, as well as the Mosaic code. "

"While Netscape was incorporating technological innovations into Navigator, their commitment to developing a multi-platform browser made their efforts increasingly uneconomical. Microsoft’s operating system, Windows, was by far the dominant operating system, and Internet Explorer only needed to be developed to run on that system. In comparison, Netscape was developing Navigator to run on up to 20 different operating systems. "
