Google late Wednesday opened up its much-anticipated Calendar service to the public in beta form, complete with Gmail integration and SMS notifications. Code-named CL2, the free service enables users to quickly add events and reminders, send invitations and share their calendar with others. Google Calendar can import events directly from Microsoft Outlook and Yahoo! Calendar, in addition to supporting calendar standards to view schedules on any device supporting iCal or XML files. Gmail will also recognize events mentioned in an e-mail to quickly add them to Google Calendar. | ||

has the world run out of NEW ideas? Its so rare to see anymore. And NO I don't consider a new shade of white ipod to be something NEW. |

#3 Do you apply the same argument to Microsoft too? You know when they come up with a new innovative idea by sticking "Live" on the end of the name... like they did a few years ago with ".net" to the point of confusing every single one of their customers with what ".net" actually is! Nevermind I think we both know that it was a rhetorical question.
Let's be honest here - this is yet another "Web 2.0" fad item that's cool to have so Google couldn't go without one. It'll be interesting to see if anything truly useful comes out of the whole "Web 2.0" fad but so far it's done nothing but provided us with the same poor web applications with some magic AJAX dust on top to make them pretty. Having said that the CRM system we use has an updated version of the web interface that has been rewritten in AJAX which is amazing but it's no different to the current version in that it doesn't allow us to do anything we cannot do right now - it just makes the interface a little simpler (i.e. more desktop app based). |

kabuki, i agree... there's plenty of dusting old apps and relaunching them to go around. MSFT too.
The problem is US. WE are the real suckers. We get all excited about 1) ajax dust (google), 2) rebranding (microsoft), 3) new color of transparent plastic (apple)... when there's not really a whole lot noteworthy about ANY of it. And the tech rags are only helping their advertisers. They do most of the PUMPING. Fortunately, those of us slightly astute on such things now have another source... blogs. They have their own set of problems too, but AT LEAST we can pick&choose our news according to our own tastes and preconceptions. Which brings me to this question... WHY do you, who obviously doesn't have a positive thing to say toward msft... frequent a site for msft enthusiasm? |

Because you're wrong when you say that I don't have a positive thing to say towards Microsoft. I have a lot of positive comments and I think they have some fantastic products (e.g. MS Office (although the automation API could be improved greatly - we do a lot of Outlook/Excel and Word automation and Word in particular isn't an exact science to put it diplomatically!), SQL Server, Visual Studio used to be THE IDE - nowadays the real standard is set by IntelliJ closely followed by Eclipse and VS 2005 is trailing but I do hope it catches up as I do both Java and C# development and I have been spoilt by IntelliJ/Eclipse). I just don't have a lot of positive comments when it comes to Microsoft's way of going about their business (illegaly leveraging their monopoly etc.) and only really pushing out really good (as oppose to "good enough") products when their bottom line is in danger (how long has IE been stagnant! People like yourself put down Firefox at every opportunity you get but yet you fail to realise that without Firefox you wouldn't be getting IE 7 - at least not so soon and not with the features/support it'll have in it!). Their attitude towards security is much the same - don't do a thing unless their bottom line is affected or they have received a lot of negative PR. etc etc. As I explained in another thread because of this site's core topic the arguments generally boil down to Windows vs. Linux/OS X/etc. and IE vs. Firefox/(Opera isn't mention much even though in many ways it's better than Firefox). Given that I don't think very highly of IE - my opinions there are quite obvious and it's much the same in the other argument except that for a lot of the time I'm curious to know how the Microsoft-only crowd can be so passionately against every other OS in existance. Does it really affect YOUR life if Linux or Apple or OpenBSD gain marketshare? Would it kill you if in 30 years time India and China convert almost exclusively to Linux? If you're are pro-choice as you make out to be why not leave the argument at "it's great that we have all these OS which keep challening everyone to keep on improving their own"? So I'll throw the question back to you - why do you have this immediate "only if it's made by Microsoft" approach to everything? Are you a stockholder and are threatened that another company/product will damage Microsoft in some way? Surely you must agree that there must be a good reason as to why you are so passionately against everything else out there - whether that's Apple in general, Linux, Google, whoever! #6 hehehe no it's not that :) |
