Expressions Interactive Designer can be downloaded at:
http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/interactive_designer/id_free_trial.aspx This is not Expressions Web Designer, the version that appears to be the Front Page child. Web designer should be available in June 2006 for download. The initial Web Designer preview was supposedly available for only 5000 people to download. This post is overly dramatic... if you look at the demos - as well as Sharepoint Designer 12 beta - you'll see that FrontPage is splitting into two products... simple and complex. With some new features.
When you first see Expression, you'll find it to be very familiar - because it is FrontPage... just a next step. You'll be able to immediately use it without any kind of training. And if you are already using the SharePoint Designer beta, you've already realized the same thing over there. IMHO, MS is handling external communication of this rather poorly... simple way to look at it is that it's just a branding change, along with new features. The branding change is to get it in line with several other new "expression" products. I am however *very* concerned that the enormously successful brand name of FrontPage could be lost in the transition... take a look at Amazon.com and see all the books written on FrontPage. Obviously an extremely popular product. In fact it is one of *the* most successful Microsoft brands. And now - to a degree - they have to start all over. As much of a fan of the FrontPage team as I am (and I truly am)... I'm concerned. IMHO they need to allocate some time to getting this new brand started... they need to get their RSS feed re-born, and they probably need to put "successor to Frontpage" on the box. FYI, I've been a user of the product since the Vermeer days... and have beta tested every version since - as an MS employee and now on my own.
