Customer upgrades to Vista not assured, users say | |

With the release of Windows Vista less than a year away, users and anlaysts are asking how many users will choose to upgrade. Elizabeth Montalbano reports Now that Microsoft has finalised Windows Vista's six editions, the challenge at hand for the company is to encourage customers to upgrade once the new operating system is available. And that challenge is nothing to sneeze at, customers and analysts say. According to them, Microsoft faces a variety of hurdles that could deter upgrades to Vista, which is expected to ship towards the end of the year. | ||

| Hey, I'll be upgrading to Vista at home to check out the newest kid on the block; but, I certainly don't see me up grading the 40 or so XP Pro boxes we use in the office. |

There's no compelling reason for corporations to upgrade. The eye candy stuff is not of corporate concern and security is already available with policies.
XP is more than good enough and without a measurable ROI(no pie in the sky stuff) it's a no brainer. |

| I believe schwit to be right - Vista is gonna have some cool stuff - but imagine the workload a corporation would have to endure in order to roll Vista out to however many workstations they have. Is the benefit worth the trouble? I don't think so... |

This same crap was said about XP.. and windows 2003..
Things will follow the same general progression they have from win95 forward... Home systems will largely be "upgraded" with new cpu purchases. Business systems smaller companies will be upgraded with new cpu purchases. Large corporate customers will evaluate Vista in late 2006 and early 2007, and begin deployments mainly in 2008, in lockstep with starting to move servers to longhorn once most of thier core apps and driver sets have been certified and have baked for awhile. It's the same thing over and over again no different they every other release. |

The new free tools for rolling out image based deployments of Vista will be compelling for companies.

This means that an organization needs only one image addressing the different hardware configurations within the company. This format has the following advantages: • It enables you to store multiple images in one file. • Microsoft can ship a single worldwide binary to its customers (one each for 32-bit and 64-bit architectures). • This format reduces file sizes significantly by using a compressed file format and single-instance storage techniques (the image file contains one physical copy of a file for each instance of it in the image file, which significantly reduces the size of image files that contain multiple images). • You can service the image offline, including adding and deleting optional components, updates, and drivers, without fundamentally creating a new image. • You can mount images as folders, making it easier to update files within images, using interfaces as common as Windows Explorer. These advantages dramatically reduce the number of images you need to maintain. etc etc |

I think I've been to a few small businesses still running Windows 98... or perhaps I'm mistaken. No, wait, people still running a perfectly functional OS 8 years after it was released. No way. Who could possibly want to run an inferior MS product that still seems to be supported by the manufacture? BTW Hawk, will you be up grading your business machines to Office 9000 when it comes out, or will you be one of those dinosaurs that MS like to dis in their ads? |

About 200 million PCs will be sold next year. 95+% of them will be sold with Vista on them. Like KnightHawk said, small businesses will mostly upgrade as they replace older PCs. Medium and large corporations will upgrade at will since Software Assurance allows them to use any of the Microsoft operating systems that they choose to use. The thing that will take time is ensuring that Vista is compatible with the applications that will be running on it. Even then, with Vista Enterprise including Virtual PC Express, non compatible applications can run in it.
By the way, articles with this as a theme have been circulating with every new Microsoft operating system release . . . boring . . . |

I'm not sure what your infering? I will recommend upgrading our organization when it makes sense for us, which will likely not be till 2008 or later. We're just now at about 50% XP 50% win2k at the desktop level. New installs get XP, and those rare users that actually require XP get it. Same plan for Vista probably. Longhorn server however is another matter we'll likely start using that a few months after general availability.. too early to tell though. All that said microsofts goal of something on the order of 200million vista users worldwide within 2 years of release doable for microsoft. My point really was that at least 1/2 of those numbers will come from new systems sales, not "upgrades". |
