Novell hopes its next desktop will leapfrog Windows | |

Novell on Thursday unveiled the features that will be available in the next version of its Linux desktop product--Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop--which the company claims will be more usable than any other desktop product on the market. "We have made a big investment taking the Linux desktop past everybody. The usability work we've done is not to reinvent Windows, but to reinvent a better desktop," Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, Novell's director of marketing for Linux and open source, told ZDNet UK on Wednesday. "When Microsoft Vista ships it will catch up to us in a number of areas, but we'll enjoy six months where Novell's Linux desktop is in the lead," he said. | ||

| The Novell Linux desktop may be quite nice. It is, however, missing a critical component; people that actually want it. Novell is filling a niche few care about. Why do they bother? Don't they know that people use Windows because the programs they like run on Windows? Morons. |

You know what, I have a dual boot machine with SUSE and I finally figured out what Linux is good for. Duh, it took me long enough.
As far as I can tell Linux is useful for getting around the “rules”. If there is a copy protection scheme out there some will get it to run on Linux for free. That’s it, you put up with a crappy OS to do illegal stuff. Its all free, so what the heck. As a result I predict increased momentum of Linux with the release of Vista. If you don’t believe me then why is it that multimedia features aren’t supported out of the box with SUSE? The user has to down load them… this shields Novell from potential liability! |

| Novells clearly on crack.. I'm sure there product will be nice, but leapfrog Windows? Yeah right... sounds about right from a marketing talking head from novell. |

Well, it must be so. Since they lead with this marketing campaign there stock price has dropped 30%! Through their previous "campaigns" I have made a nice piece of change on shorting their stock. The only reason that their stock price is as high as it is now is the shot in the arm they got from settling with Microsoft in the first quarter of 2005. I think that it can safely be said that that was their last big payday.
Years ago, the best thing the company that I work for did was to drop Novell's directory, file and print services. Saved us a bundle of money by consolidating these functions on Microsoft's WinNT 4.0! |
