People didn't lose any time in finding bugs in the latest preview release of Internet Explorer 7.
It's been but a day since Microsoft publicly released a test version of Internet Explorer 7, but Internet news groups and blogs are already teeming with bug reports. Also, one security researcher claims he found a security vulnerability in the new Web browser.
Issues reported several times include compatibility problems with McAfee security software and trouble installing the browser due to unnamed anti-spyware and antivirus tools. Some testers also said using certain features or surfing to specific Web sites caused the browser to hang or crash.

at least MS is trying to debug before the RTM release. they HAVE changed the testing progress by getting endusers more involved, earlier.

Oh No. Maybe I should switch to Firefox 1.5 because it is bug free!!!!
Ooops. My mistake:
http://news.com.com/Security+update+out+for+Firefox+1.5/2100-1002_3-6034374.html
"Mozilla on Wednesday released an update for Firefox 1.5 that fixes several security flaws and makes other changes aimed at improving the open-source Web browser.
The update, Firefox version 1.5.0.1, patches a total of eight security vulnerabilities. One is deemed "critical" by Mozilla, four are rated "moderate" risk, and three are tagged "low" risk. The more serious flaws could let an attacker take over a system running a vulnerable version of Firefox, according to Mozilla's security alerts. "

Speaking of open source:
"Open Source has always prided itself in openness, but why is the Mozilla foundation patching security flaws without disclosing what they are? A new Update for Firefox 1.5 was released by Mozilla which actually has a long list of bug fixes several of which are described in Mozilla's advisory as "several security enhancements". The problem is that we don't know what all but one of these security fixes are and that seems to fly in the face of the Open Source mantra.
The one security fix in this update that was disclosed was an arguably serious DoS (Denial of Service) flaw that was publicly disclosed in December 2005 by a 3rd party with proof-of-concept exploit code. That 3rd party maintains that the flaw is serious enough to trigger code-execution but Mozilla disputes this claim. But now that Mozilla is patching holes in secrecy, one has to wonder if there are more serious vulnerabilities that were patched but not disclosed.
It's a mystery why Mozilla is operating in secrecy with Open Source code and one can only speculate about the motivations. Mozilla has always claimed to have the high ground to Microsoft when it comes to security although my report shows that this is debatable. It's one thing to keep vulnerabilities secret when there is no fix because no one wants zero-day vulnerabilities, but patching holes and not telling people what the problem was just seems wrong."

Just because ActiveWin never posts articles about Firefox bugs anymore (too many?):
Notable bug fixes
312415 - Selected images (from a selection of the document to print) are black.
105894 - Clicking a partially off-screen link shouldn't scroll the page.
299343 - Can't copy and paste into the beginning of a line (Midas/designMode).
314222 - If link target URL has non-ASCII char that is not encoded by UTF-8, the default file name is always escaped at "Save Link As...".
312550 - Incorrect wrapping in RTL textarea with horizontal scrollbar.
311480 - "Firefox could not install this item because of a failure in Chrome Registration. Please contact the author about this problem." (This bug is responsible for the release note: "If Firefox 1.5 is installed on a multi-user system in a location which is not writable by users, Firefox must be run once by a privileged user. If this is not desirable, an empty file must be created in the following directory: <install-directory>/extensions/talkback@mozilla.org/chrome.manifest")
296907 - <canvas> fill/stroke shouldn't destroy path.
301678 - XML object parsed from string from flash throws permission denied error when accessed.
309044 - Flash Player 8 "Bad NPObject as private data!".
319391 - "eval('...') = ..." gives "invalid assignment lefthand side" as a compile-time error instead of as a runtime error (regression).
318489 - Unable to create new XMLHttpRequests and DOMParsers from an XPCNativeWrapped window (e.g. in a Greasemonkey script).
315434 - Security error with remote <xul:tabbox>: can't switch tabs if chrome has focus.
Security
319004 - Overlong page title causes hang on subsequent startups.
Other security holes not yet disclosed (as of 2006-02-01).
Crashes
319357 (topcrash #5) - Crash in browser when attempting to print a text selection [@ nsImageWin::DrawTile].
320488 (topcrash #42) - Crash [@ nsSHistory::EvictWindowContentViewers].
306067 (topcrash #49) - Crash involving autocomplete.
315509 - Crash: array_unshift doesn't handle holes properly [@ js_DeleteProperty - array_unshift].
316821 - Crash with moz-border-radius and small font-size.
318922 - E4X: invalid syntax to use a memory variable crashes Firefox.
Memory leaks
316775 - Leak when selecting.
317478 - Leaks due to global scope polluter being removed from not enough (?) prototype chains. (Large leak on any page that relies on seeing element IDs in the global scope.)
Mac-specific bugs
313988 - [Mac OS X 10.3] Positioned select drop-down doesn't work.
298502 - [Mac OS X 10.2] Empty pulldown menu and Firefox hangs. (This bug was the reason the "system requirements" page for Firefox 1.5 said it required Mac OS X 10.3.)
Linux-specific bugs
305970 - [Linux] Certain UI operations (opening dialogs, drag and drop) cause refresh, prolonged hang (with new versions of GTK).
Solaris-specific bugs
312154 - [Solaris] Start script does not take care of running instance.

From my viewpoint I find since using Firefox, bugs aside, that I have never had anything detected with various spyware scanners or my virus scanner (NOD32). With IE, I did and on occasion, I still do when IE is needed; activex or required to render properly.
However the latest IE beta seems to be heading in the right direction. Also IE is an integrale part of Windows; the core needs to be there for Windows to function properly as an everyday OS. That said. IE still has the largest part of the browser market and will always be a target if it stays on top.
I view Firefox as a safe browser as long as your are responsible on the web. With Internet Explorer, you can be caught off guard. For instance, click here to close this window; a small vb sript installs a malicious app.
Bugs are a fact of life (it seems) as far as software is concerned. How you deal with them is up to you. Because, unless you are a coder for the company, that's all you can do.

I was expecting a defence of the number of security holes and bugs in Firefox, but nothing so deep.

Hey, Parker... Post the historical IE list now.
Wait, can't do that. AW hasn't gotten in their new 100 Terabyte RAID yet, and you'll need it for a post that size.
