AT STAKE is whether Microsoft and the roster of blue-chip companies tied to Sun — including UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and General Motors Corp. — will continue to work separately, or together, to make it easier to electronically identify people who want to buy things or do other business over the Internet. Its time that Cred Card vendors get their heads out of their asses and get into the 21st century.
There should never be a reason to send a CC number anywhere, especially over computers. You should indicate that you wish to buy something from a site and your type in your CC on your computer (or swipe your card) and it generates a one-time hash or encrypted version of it and transmit that to the site, which then transmits it to the CC company. Only the CC company can make sense of the hash or encryption. Use standard (and proven) encryption technologies. I wouldn't mind someone storing some sort of meta information of me that only the credit card company could make sense of. It'd be easier for me, and if someone hacked the Passport db, for example, all they'd get is this useless hash that has no meaning without having me or the CC company involved. |

I just think its funny because my passport only holds my country, state, and zip code (Which are all bogus). I have many sites where I buy stuff that hold alot more than that. Though if I wanted to my passport profile could hold many other things... I CHOOSE NOT TO PROVIDE IT. All you privacy zealots should learn to realize that if you care about privacy then don't use those tools which upset you... otherwise STFU and let us talk about something of real importance. Hell there are companies which will give out credit reports on anybody if you pay them... now that is more of an issue then some online authentication scheme.
and #2... I wish my life was like yours so I could spend so much time worrying about the rest of the world's privacy. |

It all comes down to what the user wants to do. If I chose to put my info on Passport then I would be exposing myself to the risks. By not I do not have any of the risks. I use passport for meaningless things like page personalization and MSDN subscriptions. Those who use the credit card information most likely know by this time that it is a "risk" and if they don't then they need help anyways.
My point being is that nobody has the right to decide what services are rendered unless the are unlawful. The simple fact that Passport could be hacked is not grounds enough to take them down. And if you don't like it don't use it. That is the power of this economy... let the consumer choose. If noboy used it MS would not back it nor support it and let it die like they do everything that people aren't interested in. In closing I am feel that my personal information has a better chance of being stolen from my trash can then passport. For those of you who stay up nights wondering if some marketing company knows you visited 2 porn sites and amazon.com that night... please seal yourself in a bubble and stay outta the way of those who wish to live their lives in a state other than fear and paranoia. |
