Very savvy business move - having zip to do with a new product line, or change in direction
on the part of Symantec....
This one is about killing innovation and sustaining the anti-mal-ware tax... just as it is.
By producing a product, identical in its purpose and essential functionality as OneCare, Symantec, is pressing Microsoft's sensitivity to anything that might be used to leverage anti-trust legislators.
Symantec sent a shot across the box - so to speak, by creating the appearance of a product that might not be as attractive to Microsoft's OneCare and virtually assure that OneCare could not be included as an option for even Vista Home Premium Versions...oh wait....now you see why Bill Gates and Microsoft are so successful - they "shape" the future...and also why there are so many "choices" opposite the Vista line...as a "Premium" product, costing a bit more than Vista Home Basic, Microsoft can include OneCare.
Symantec will of course still bring a legal suit; however, no precedent in law could ever prohibit a company from selling "Premium" products that just happen to a) cost more and b) actually include premium components. To do so would set deci's that no court would uphold...imagine....ok Volvo...that's it...we're going to court...how dare you include side curtain airbags!!!
Chris of course will label this as "Propaganda" - and perhaps it is, but that is also a form of marketing and promotion and that is legal, too. Mr Gates, and Mr. Ballmer and their crew are not just smarter - they're smarter all the time and much deeper in their thinking. They understand that "if" one drives one's own car in a race, that they at least get to decide what mistakes they make and not have them dictated by the car that might be in front of them - and about to be lapped, again. Symantec did the reverse and will pay for it with about 60% of their market cap [my bet]. Here's the irony - Bill Gates wanted all people to have access to a PC and what it could do - he meant that.... he also said he wanted all Microsoft software to be secure....he meant that, too....and so few believed him, or took that seriously. He meant it and he's securing it and the domination that these actions earn, while they do monopolize PC based computing, they are not illegal, or even immoral. They are however, really smart.
