If new features won't get you to upgrade to Vista, security enhancements should, Windows chief Jim Allchin has urged. Microsoft has already touted the bells and whistles it is putting into Windows Vista, the operating system successor to XP that's due out by the end of the year. There will be flashy new graphics, a spiffed-up user interface and advanced search features. Other changes include improved touch-screen support and a Windows sidebar that can display all kinds of information such as upcoming appointments, just-in e-mail messages and a clock. But if none of that strikes your fancy, Vista will still be worth getting, thanks to its better defenses against phishing attacks, spyware and other malicious code, Allchin said. | ||

| It seems to me that we've heard this same whopper from MS with every new OS from Windows NT on to now. The fact that they put out a fix for the WMF flaw for Vista tells me that the same old crufty code is still in there. I predict that it will be less than 3 months before the first "own your box" exploit is found in Vista. |

The article mentions that Microsoft has already had to patch an exploit in the Vista CTP release - So you're right Latch, it's only a matter of time..
Of course you must consider the user too - if you're not using the limited admin or basic user accounts and instead going full blow admin rights, then you better be careful what you do... |

| #2: Limited user roles is a step in the right direction. The rub will be how much of a PITA it will be to use the system for the average user, and how easily will the average user be able to side-step user roles and just run as admin? I admit that I've never installed & run any of the Vista leaks & betas. |

#1 - No new client OS has gone through the full Trustworthy Computing initiative since MS announced it in 2002. XP SP1 was released about a month after that (was so late in the testing cycle to reverse it) but that was the reason for SP2's delay. Still, it wasn't a total overview change -- for example, changing default user permissions is not something you can do with a service pack.
#2 - Nothing is perfect by default. However, even the patch for Vista was far less critical than the one for XP. Quote from the KB article concerning the WMF patch: "An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights." Considering that Vista runs IE in protected mode (similar to DropMyRights, if anyone else uses that on XP - you probably should), this basically makes it almost a non-issue for Vista users, unless they specifically disabled that right. #3 - Firefox and Vista run pretty closely as far as function. IE in protected mode doesn't allow execution of anything and only allows you to save data. Not that much of a pain. However, they're extending this functionality to all internet facing apps, so this should be interesting... |

Are you saying that there are no (security related) improvments in Windows Vista vs XP vs 2000 Pro vs NT Workstation? Or Windows 2003 R2 Server vs 2003 Server vs 2000 Server vs NT Server? Anyways, you know the system that is perfect? |
