Microsoft exec says XP will revive PC sales | |

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Windows XP will help pull the PC market out of its tailspin in 2002, according to one of Microsoft's key executives, because it gives consumers a lot more reasons to upgrade than did its predecessors. "The timing is incredibly good for the PC industry right now," Jim Allchin, group vice president at Microsoft, said during a speech at the Intel Developer Forum on Tuesday. "We should have a very good next year, and when I say we, I mean the industry." The PC industry has been in a slump for almost a full year. Sales will likely decline for the first time ever in 2001, according to many analysts, and few executives have been willing to give optimistic predictions about the future. In the midst of this gloom, Microsoft will launch the next version of its operating system Oct. 25. | ||

#6, the average user becomes a totally different animal once they've used a PC for a while. And, if your logic were applied to other products, we'd all still be driving our first car, watching 19" televisions, and very happy with our Atari 2600. Come on... This is for everyone... Steve Balmer made a statement that he wants everyone in the company to upgrade to XP on their home systems... no, they do not have to pay for this, I don't believe. |

Keep in mind that people aren't going to be upgrading from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.
They are upgrading from Windows 9x to Windows XP. Very few home users run Win2k, and for them XP is a highly compelling upgrade. I know I for one would like to see my parents upgrade. This upgrade is as signifigant as the Windows 95 release. However unlike Win95 I don't believe it will spur a long term surge in computing expenditures, but more like a short term bubble over the next year. |

Mr. Key Point, please don't be so narrow minded. YES, you can liken the products I mentioned to an OS. Why? Because automobiles, TVs, and game consoles ARE luxury items, and consumers frequently over-spend on them. They are "wants" not "needs". You don't need to pay $30k for an SUV, when a $13k sedan will satisfy your need. AND, you're correct, consumers don't know what makes said product better, nor do they care. They only know "Why buy a 21" when I can buy a Big Screen..." And that's exactly why XP will sell, and spark PC sales and upgrades. It's fundamental human behavior, and is exactly what drives the economy. BTW, I support 150 users, manage an NT Domain, Exchange & SQL servers, and program custom DB apps, and it's negative, "all users are idiots", dick-with-ears, such as yourself, that cause users to lose respect for support professionals. #16 Why do I want my parents to upgrade to Windows XP? Oh where to begin. Maybe because I like my parents and want to give them the best computing experience available. I take it you are a good child and help your parents out when they have problems with their computer. Enter Remote Desktop Assistance. Your parents can email you to walk them through something on their computer that way you don't have to be physically there and can usually take care of problems much easier that way. That is the killer app feature in my opinion of XP. That makes it worth the upgrade. In fact I would pay more money than 90 bucks for the upgrade to get that functionality.
#17 since your car is a need then a computer is definitely a need for a ton of people as well. How many jobs are there now where you have to use a computer? Time is money and if you can be more productive because of software then that holds real gains for companies. Lets see what happens here. And I love how you guys post anonymously. What's a matter not confident enough to back up your answers? |
