Microsoft: Aero Glass is the final UI for Windows Vista | |

Back in 2001 Microsoft's early betas of Windows XP contained a user interface dubbed "Watercolor". But only months before the operating system shipped Microsoft completely replaced it with an entirely different look and feel called "Luna" which became known as "Windows XP Style". That move has created speculation that current Windows Vista look and feel, called Aero glass, would be replaced by a different look and feel later in the beta process. However, this week's PowerUser.TV podcast has an interview with Microsoft developers who have confirmed that there will be no major change to the look and feel of Windows Vista from what is being shown in build 5270. In other words, Aero-Glass is it. | ||

After using build 5270 since it was available for download, it feels like going back to Windows 3.1 when using XP, relatively speaking. The screen shots of the Aero Glass interface don't do it justice. The thumbnail images that smoothly appear when moving the cursor over open programs buttons in the taskbar is very slick and effective in reminding me what I am working on in all open programs. The variable menu off the "start?" button is slick and user friendly. This is a big upgrade that is better than expected.
A uncalled for tidbit for Linux fans, who otherwise may feel angered by anyone praising a Windows build: Knoppix 4 is very cool also, for a Live program that runs off of a bootable DVD. Download it and have fun working without a hard drive, if you want to. Knoppix is a great Windows troubleshooting program also. |

| I was hoping this wasn't the case. :( But I guess I have to play with Beta 2 when it comes out before I make any judgments. At least at this point, though, I'm not crazy about the translucent window borders (but I realize you can turn that off). |

PLEASE can you put in the ability to re-arrange items in the Task Bar how ever you want!
All I have wanted for 10 years now is the ability to do this! (and if I'm missing something please tell me!) I know this sounds like a small thing, but I REALLY WANT THIS! I cant believe I'm the only one Also, the ability to change the speed of any animation or effect would be really cool- I will turn off all this stuff it it looks slow ar seems to take too long It would be very cool to just "think" you saw it happen! And, I'm never going to give up on this, could you please make it so that if I put the Task Bar vertically on the left side of the screen the Start Button and Quick Launch stay in the lower left corner! This would really be the best thing you could do!! |

#3 and who exactly are you talking to? This isn't a Microsoft board.
But, Microsoft Research has a beata version of a much much more versatile taskbar, you should check it out. As far as animation timings, you should be able to change that at the very least in the registry, they'll probably have a UI for it in TweakUI. |

kevn84--they specifically mention in the podcast the timing of the animations as registry settings, although they say that they may not be available in the final release. My guess is that they will be there.
And do check out the GroupBar demo that CPUGuy mentioned: http://research.microsoft.com/vibe/groupbar.aspx. It sounds like it does what you want, among other things. But I agree--it'd be nice if they built the rearrangement capability into Vista. |
