Digital wizardry showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show last week by Microsoft, Sonicblue, Motorola and others promises to infuse PC technology into home entertainment networks. The theme: living room convergence. While cautious consumers inch toward convergence, analysts are clear that although new products have a notable "Wow!" factor, more time is needed before the masses are likely to open their pocketbooks and pay up for advanced digital entertainment. | ||

The most promising thing I saw was the HomePlug stuff.
14mbit/sec over standard power lines. Works through surge suppressors, UPS's, etc... And it's NOT proprietary! The adapters to be sold by Phonex are standard Ethernet devices. Just plug one into the wall where you need it, and plug ANY Ethernet capable machine into the other side. On the router end, just plug one into the wall, and another into a router port. Instant remote network. I have verified with Phonex that their device doesn't care if it's a PC or Mac. TL |

Linksys also has products coming out for the HomePlug stuff. I am still not sure if I am sold on this as evidently the signal can go across houses and that raises the same issues as wireless.

#6 - The failure in your argument is an assumption that anybody is being forced to buy anything. That has never been the case.
#2 - I agree, it's a long way off. But it is getting closer. First step is to get rid of X10, the protocol sucks from my experience. #5 - don't forget CD-I, that was the big competitor of CDTV. Neither did really well, but the ideas held and were reinvented into the DVD concept. |
