Three-Year-Old Version of Word Resurfaces in Microsoft Works 2006 | |

Microsoft has refreshed and upgraded a number of elements in its latest consumer desktop office bundle. But a 2002 version of Word also is part of the package. Microsoft released on Thursday its Works Suite 2006, a collection of software from the Home Retail Division marketed as a time-saver for busy families to get the most out of their home PCs. The release includes refreshed or new versions of several Microsoft consumer products. Among them: Upgrades of Digital Image Standard, which now supports video, hierarchical keywords, and labels for organizing photos; and Microsoft Money Standard, which now includes a multiple bill payment tool, which allows users to pay multiple bills from numerous accounts all at once. Other new additions to the latest Works suite include a sorting tool for Encarta and "Locate Me" technology for lost travelers in Streets & Trips Essentials. | ||

The reason that Works Suite includes Word 2002 instead of Word 2003 is really quite simple: Word 2002 works on Windows 98/Me, while 2003 requires 2000/XP. Since Works obviously is targeted to the home market, it makes sense that it work on 98 and Me.
(Personally, I long for the day that 9x support is gone forever. Why oh why is the new .NET Framework 2.0 available for 98, when for example IE7 won't even work on 2000?!) |

I'm sorry - can you go back a step and explain how home market = win 98 and me? I'm curious as there's such a product as Windows XP Home Edition - which for some strange reason I would guess would be for the home market. Fair enough that they want Works to work on as many versions of Windows as possible - but I would have assumed that they also want users to move OFF the win 9x base and onto the nt base - you know, to eventually get everyone onto Vista. |
