Meeting the growing demand for high-end optical storage devices in Korea, LG Electronics has introduced its new 12x DVD ROM drives previously sold in foreign markets only.
The product, model-named DRD-8120B, transmits data at the speed of 16,200 Kbps, double that of ordinary 8x DVD ROM drives. Its access time for DVD-ROMs averages 150 milliseconds and its access time for CD ROMs is 100 milliseconds.
It supports both Windows operating systems and Linux, and features an auto-balancing device that prevents the vibration and noise caused by high-speed rotations.
The world market of optical storage devices is estimated at 180 million units this year, with the DVD-ROM segment reaching 37 million units.
