Microsoft's Vista looks to get tablets on write track | |

LOS ANGELES--After years of trying to decipher your scribbles on its own, Microsoft is looking for a little help. In Vista, the new incarnation of desktop Windows, due next year, the software giant will allow users to offer the operating system examples of their own handwriting in an effort to improve handwriting recognition. The personalization feature, which is optional, is one of a number of Tablet PC enhancements disclosed this week as part of an updated test version of Vista. Other new Tablet-specific features in this latest version of Vista include, for example, new "gestures" designed to make it easier to navigate through Web pages, send e-mail and manage other frequent tasks without having to switch to a keyboard. | ||

This seems like business school 101 problem! Maybe it is just me but it seems that Microsoft is trying to create a market for a product. Where as it should be other way around, create a product in response to a market need. An example would be laptops. Clearly the market was there for that form factor. With the tablet I can't think of a broad market need that it fills.

I think the market need is obvious--any situation in which a keyboard method of input seems inappropriate, but where a computer would be useful for input nonetheless. Usually, taking a laptop to a meeting and typing away seems a bit rude and not attentive, but writing on a notepad is perfectly appropriate and sometimes shows extra attentiveness. Meetings are common among most businesses and organizations, and this is where the tablet shines.

| Tablets are very popular in the healthcare industry. Doctors and nurses are always moving around and tablets fit in great in their workflows. Plus, in the exam room, would you rather have your nurse/doctor turning back and forth between a computer and you, or facing you and using a tablet? |
