As you can see, Microsoft is trying to do away with the "legacy" menu bar. In newer Vista builds the menu bar is turned off by default (although it can be reactivated temporarily by pressing alt). In Office 12, the menus have been replaced with tab-like buttons. For instance, a click of the Write button will open and display buttons, bars and shortcuts pertinent to writing, such as font face, alignment, and line spacing. Clicking insert tab will hide all the Write buttons, and will introduce buttons and options for inserting tables, images, charts, word art, etc... The only "legacy" menu item that remains is the file menu, but it has completely been redesigned. The file menu now looks like the Windows XP start menu and can be customized as well. More to come... It's certainly a lot different. In a way, it doesn't even look like Word. If anything, the new menu/tab interface solves the problem of having 3-4 rows of toolbars full of hard-to-interpret icons that you have to mouse-over to remember what they do.
BTW, these screenshots need mirroring badly before the load kills that site (it's close, already). |

| I'm very curious to see how this will affect existing custom toolbars. I understand the premise--which I think is worthwhile--but they also tried this using a different approach with the auto-hide toolbars in previous versions of Office (similar to the "hide inactive icons" option for the systray), and that wasn't too popular, from what I've seen. But what I think I will definitely like about it is that it goes a long ways to get rid of the modal dialogs for different functions. Toolbar bloat isn't pretty, either, and I shudder when I walk around and see poor folks running 800x600 displays and 6 toolbars and only a sliver of actual document space in Word. |
