Some system administrators think they are a DBA just because they can install SQL Server and configure Backup Exec to run a nightly full backup. Frankly I think that DBAs need to have more skills than that, and should be expected to write code. That includes skills like application support, reporting, ad hoc SQL, DML, stored procedures, DDL, DTS/ETL, disaster recovery, and performance tuning. Good DBAs are software developers AND system administrators.
