Opinion: Emphasis on integration and coding in SQL Server 2005 forces database specialists to learn programmers' tricks. Microsoft hates DBAs. Ask anyone. OK, ask anyone who is a DBA, especially those who don't really support SQL Server. I have attended my share of IOUG and IDUG conferences in my day. I always enjoyed the performance-related presentations where one could debate the relative impact of locking scenarios and dynamic versus static SQL, or indexing strategies. | ||

| Some system administrators think they are a DBA just because they can install SQL Server and configure Backup Exec to run a nightly full backup. Frankly I think that DBAs need to have more skills than that, and should be expected to write code. That includes skills like application support, reporting, ad hoc SQL, DML, stored procedures, DDL, DTS/ETL, disaster recovery, and performance tuning. Good DBAs are software developers AND system administrators. |

| I am a DBA and I would never say MS hates DBAs. I am impressed with all the things they are doing in SQL 2005. We have been runnign SQL 2000 at my office for about four years, and never had a problem with it. I don't think I can say that about any other software program. |
