Windows Vista beta testers have stumbled upon a networking feature in the operating system that could pose a security risk to them--but they say they're not worried. After installing the first beta release of the upcoming Windows client, some testers noticed suspicious network traffic to their machines. Concerned about a possible attack, these people last week contacted the SANS Internet Storm Center. | ||

| I realize that "secure by default" is a good thing and wouldn't suggest otherwise, but I think there is also a drawback in that non-default installations don't receive near the security scrutiny that they once "enjoyed." IIS improved immeasurably (and at the expense of its users at times) because of its once-broad attack surface. If those exposed features had instead been turned off by default, they may never have been discovered and patched. |

The Windows Vista Beta 1 Privacy Policy (posted at MS's site, and also somewhere here on ActiveWin) has a section covering the peer-to-peer service in question. It clearly states that it is on by default. And yet people are still saying bashing Microsoft for supposedly not telling them: ""If you change the default, you need to let us know about it," said Thomas Smith, a Windows Vista beta tester in Houston"...
Anyone using this beta who's worried about their privacy should read the privacy policy, you'd think? Yes the service should, and will, be off by default in the final release. |
