I had a chance two weeks ago to sit down and interview Wendy Apperson, Product Manager for Microsoft Hardware about two of the new Microsoft hardware products released this summer. Here is an excerpt: ActiveWin.com: What would you say the overall goal is for the Microsoft Remote Keyboard for Windows XP Media Center Edition? Apperson: I would say one of the main goals is to simplify and improve the user's overall media and entertainment experience as a whole in the living room. We entered the Media Center market last year with the Media Center remote which has been pretty sucessful, but now we are expanding in that market by building on where the remote has left off. We now understand better how people are using the remote and MCE in the living room and have a clearer picture of the general user scenario and what can be added or improved upon. We are finding entertainment is more of an interactive and community based activity with MCE then only using the Internet before. | ||

| The Media center Keyboard should be very successfull; personally I can'tt wait to get one of them. Whenever I need to use mouse or keyboard with my MCE box I have to get up from the couch and get close to the TV area and I have an apartment not a mansion. Great job MS! |

I have one of those small wireless jobs with the 'wave in the air' mice. Frankly I find the mouse annoying as hell.

As for the Wireless Desktop, I have the Logitech DiNovo. Great equipment, but I've come to despise BlueTooth, it's software, it's configuration, and basically anything to do with Bluetooth.
The software adds a good 30 seconds to my startup time and requires a rocket scientist to understand and configure. It's sitting on the shelf now. I've found my new personal favorite keyboard. The IBM Desktop Keyboard with UltraNav. This is basically an exact duplicate of the T-Series Laptop Keyboard (which is excellent) mounted in a compact external case. It has the same touchpad and TrackPoint as the Laptop and all the other keys are there as well. It adds a standard keypad to the mix, though you can get a 'travel' version that is the same without the keypad. It's not cheap (around $100) but since I work on hundreds of ThinkPads a year and love the keyboards, this thing is a perfect fit for me. Wireless mice I can take or leave (mostly leave). The IBM external UltraNav has two USB ports on the back, a perfect place to plug in a mouse. TL |

| Same here; I used MS Bluetooth combo for a while but then I gave up: the linking process was not only cumbersome but unstable too. |

| agreed. bluetooth was either rushed by the industry... or I have really bad luck. |
