I
have posted up our review of Temco's rather fab looking Dead or Alive 3 Xbox
game. Here is a little snippet from the review:
As poor as the storylines are, you can't help but be impressed with the way the game can switch from one location to another by throwing an opponent off a cliff or through a window down onto the ground outside. This helps give the game a more strategic edge when compared to other fighting games. You can't help but laugh as you smash a friend through a glass window 100 feet onto the floor below. The problem I have with the Single player game most is probably the fact that it doesn't take much skill, I have managed to complete it a few times without concentrating on the moves I am making and just pushing the controller buttons in random order.

I owned an XBox for 1/2 a day, and then took it back. Believe me, the people scammering to get one had no complaints :)
Don't get me wrong. There's NOTHING wrong with the XBox. However, when it comes down to brass tacks, it's a neutered PC, with a 700Mhz Processor, hard drive and embedded nVidia Chipset and Graphics.
And there's NOTHING wrong with that.
Unless, of course, you already own a PC with an Athlon 1800+ processor, GeForce Ti500 Hard Drive, 512MB of RAM, a Klipsh ProMedia 5.1 Speaker System, DVD with DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 playback, many game controllers, about 300GB of hard drive space and a 22" Flat-CRT Monitor.
Then the XBox is a lot less compelling...
There IS something to be said about a game machine that DOESN'T have all this stuff. It's simpler. No driver nonsense to worry about (we think). No 4in1 updates. etc...
In short, the XBox is nice. If you want one (and can find one), go for it. BUT, if you have a high-end Gaming PC already, trust me. It won't be a compelling purchase for you.
Just some friendly IMHO advice :)

I guess i'm one of those who would disagree..Having a high end PC is great - but its bogged down by the OS and game designers having to make sure their games work on all kinds of hardware. With the Xbox or any other console, that goes out the window...They have a set type of hardware to design for, no memory heavy OS to work around and thus (Halo being the prime example) they can design games that are currently better than you will see on a high end PC's.
I will agree with you though that probably by this time next year the Xbox won't look so great against a new PC...but right now nothing out there can touch Halo or DOA 3 in graphical terms on the PC.

Byron,
Your first paragraph echo's precisely what I was saying when I said "There IS something to be said about a machine.....<snip>.....
I don't have _too_ many PC problems. I do try to avoid VIA chipsets, though :)

As much as I hate to do it, I'll have to agree with Byron. I have a high-end PC and I definitely enjoy the seperate Xbox system. Also I feel that the Xbox is more entertainment than my PC. I need for them to be seperate. The last thing I need is to be sitting in front of my computer MORE lol. And like both fo you said....it requires no updates, no real maintence.

#5,
I have to somewhat disagree with your first sentence. Until the XBox, I would have agreed. But, if you look at all the hype surrounding the XBox, it's mostly been geared towards the HARDWARE aspect of the thing. Yes, the games are nice. But most of the stories I've read out there haven't been technical details about the games. It's been about the innards.
So, while the games ARE important, the XBox breaks from tradition somewhat. It's about the innards too :)
There are many, many games on the PC that more than compete with the XBox. Show me Nascar Racing 4 on the XBox, in ALL it's glory (including 40+ racer multiplayer), and I'll be truly impressed :)
#6,
Well, you're a damned smart person. What can I say :)
#7,
A fairly accurate statement that's hard to argue with, but VIA keeps you trying :)
#8,
I bought it because I thought it would be 'different' to me. It wasn't. My first turn-off was when I saw that Project Gotham Racing didn't have an in-car dash view. Like most other Console racing games, it uses either 'bumper-cam' or 'helo-cam'.
The rest is hard to explain. It' just didn't trip my trigger.
Also, I cannot agree with the statement "but it still plays games as good or better than a current PC" because I disagree with this in many ways. But, that's OK! You get something different out of the XBox experience than I do :)
Remember folks, I made it clear that I think the XBOX is a NEAT MACHINE! Those with high-end gaming PC's should just think it through well.
I'm just relaying MY experience, and what I got out of it. It isn't an agreement/disagreement thing :)

#10 - Agreed, same as with every console. But the Xbox right now it better than most PC's, its not to do with the speed of the processor etc its down to the fact designers can design for one type of hardware setup. But yes within 6-12 months Xbox games might start to look dated. People keep saying that PC games look great on the 21"/or flatscreen monitor - thats good, but I thought that too until I played Halo on my 32" Widescreen TV.

#11 - I'd say go into the store and try it out for yourself..Don't take my view or anyone elses views - its a personal thing, if you like games and gaming, you can't go wrong with the Xbox right now (Or the Playstation 2 for that matter, although that does look dated compared to some PC games)

I know on the Halo and PGR games at least MS included game demos for the other xbox games.

#21 has a great point.
It sucks to huddle around a 21" screen with a bunch of gamepads and play multiplayer games on your PC. It only really works in college but even then it kinda sucks.
Consoles are great because you can play on any screen, sit on the couch, and really get into it with anybody. I play all sorts of games on my PC but I just love sitting down with some pop or beer and going to work on my HDTV 53" tv with my high def X-Box.
They are both completely different though. One is just best for playing with a group in the same space. The interesting thing is when you can play with consoles over the net on broadband. That will probably take things to the next level. Of course, they will have to give me a keyboard and mouse for those FPS games.

#27 - I would understand people's points on this if they can point me out a game on the PC that has better graphics than both Halo and DOA3...currently (and believe me I have Return To Castle Wolfenstein etc) there isn't a game that manages it on the PC yet...yet.
