Microsoft released a number of free entertainment enhancements to its Windows XP operating system Thursday, as the software maker continues to advance its digital media strategy. Dubbed Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP, the free download includes tools for getting more out of the new operating system's built-in media player. Microsoft's holiday goodie bag includes new visualizations and skins, playlist-to-spreadsheet export utility, and extra tools for amateur moviemakers. | ||

XP is a bust because one obscure news site says it's a bust with large and medium businesses?
Hm. A logical leap of a scale not uncommon on today's Internet. But still wrong. XP is an excellent operating system whose commercial success has not reached that of Windows 2000 due to the obvious factors (which were, incidentally, mentioned in the article you referred to) of a slowing economy and general happiness in the business world with its predecessor. In other words, businesses are asking "Why upgrade to XP from 2000" and further, "Even if I wanted to upgrade from 2000 to XP, I don't have the cash to do it!". And they are substantially right; XP is not a compelling upgrade for most users of Windows 2000. XP is a superior OS, but it is not compellingly so for those in a business environment. But MS realizes this! That is WHY they are marketing XP primarily to home users, who mostly use 95, 98, and ME. And for them, XP is the most compelling upgrade ever. |

Every single OS release that Microsoft has put out has been called a bust by the media with disappointing sales and so on.
I remember when it was claimed in '95 that OS/2 had more sales than Win95. It's also interesting that this newsfactor article quotes the Infoworld study. When the authors of that study were queried for additional information needed to independently reproduce the results in the Infoworld forums, they were unwilling to answer. While other studies from ZDNet and such have shown XP to have a substantial performance improvement over Win2k in a variety of critical areas, why do these people keep quoting the Infoworld one? Just seems kind of bizarre. I worry about Infoworld. Ever since Metcalfe left, the quality has been going down. |
