Mac OS X for Intel will not boot on machines sold by other PC manufactures, according to Apple vice president Phil Schiller. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said. Schiller calmed concerns that Apple might lose sales to manufacturers of cheaper PCs if Mac OS X could run on such machines. | ||

Isn't this the definition of a monopolistic practice? I know, before anyone even gets started, you need a major share of a market (the amount of which is determined by the courts after the fact, and after you cross the line from legal practice to illegal monopoly) to be defined as a "monopoly". But, if MS did the same thing, they would be crucified. I initially applauded Apple's move (be able to dual-boot XP and OS X....sweet), but now it seems like a no-starter story. |

And within the first 2 weeks someone will have found out how to get OSX to run on a vanilla PC and Apple will be pissed off about it.
OSX is just BSD with some add-ons, BSD already runs on tons of PC hardware, it's not rocket science to make the next logical leap. |

This is a stupid decision as OS profit margins run about 90%. Hardware PC margins run less than 20%. Apple would still sell branded Macs to the loyalists but could increase profits substantially by offering OSX for the PC. The big bucks would be made if it was download only as there would be no upfront costs to fill the distributor and retail pipelines.
Steve Jobs has another chance to meet or beat Microsoft, but is too stubborn to realize it. |

| LOL at the very idea of Steve Jobs wanting to "open Apple". This move was simply one of survival. Wait a week or two, and IBM's side of the story will be told. IBM prompted this move, as they went to more lucrative markets (video games) since apple didn't provide enough volumen for IBM to make solid profits from PowerPC. Apple's choice was one of 1) whither on the vine, or 2) move to Intel and see what happens. |

The whole thing is simply about a Processor Migration. Apple's vision, plans or strategies otherwise have not changed one bit. It's the NEWS MEDIA that has blown this whole thing out of proportion with it's guesses, forsights (LOL) and articles from the so-called experts (WSJ, Garnet, etc...). Nothing really to see here. No, it's not. Apple does not license it's hardware or operating system. They don't drive others with competing products for the platform (well, for the OS and Hardware at least - some of the rest is up to interpretation) out of business. Apple is a sole-provider. That is not a monopoly. Just because Ford is the only company that builds the Mustang it does not mean it is a Monopoly. TL |

You don't think their "plans" have changed? This is a major distraction to any plans they had. And you don't think their "strategies" are changed? They have marketed the hardware as much as they have thier OS for all these years. Now, they are reduced to a GUI. |

It's exactly what they've done all along, actually. Most of the OS team is NeXT. OpenStep was multi-platform. OS X has been developed for 5 years on both platforms. If anything is much easier to say, THIS WAS THEIR STRATEGY ALL ALONG. "Now, they are reduced to a GUI." And QuickTime and ColoSync and CoreData and CoreImage and CoreVideo and WebObjects and Carbon and Cocoa and WebKit and about a thousand other technologies... Not to mention apps: iLife, iWork, Final Cut Pro, Logic, Shake, Motion, GarageBand... Not to mention services: .Mac and iTMS.... Not to mention the WHOLE OS is still an asset, it's just platform indepedent now... yeah, they're reduced to a GUI. |
