Microsoft's Longhorn Operating System: Sure Hit or Longshot? | |

When Microsoft chairman Bill Gates touts his company's next Windows operating system, code named "Longhorn," he can barely contain his enthusiasm, adding "it will be super to get that out in the hands of our customers." The big question is whether customers will share Gates' enthusiasm more than a year from now. Speaking at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Seattle on April 25, Gates gave a preview of Longhorn, to be released in late 2006. The preview, demonstrated in a keynote speech by Gates and other executives, showed off security enhancements, a computer "flight data recorder" that can diagnose the reasons for crashes, "rich indexing" that will allow easy searches and previews of the contents of a hard drive, and visual effects such as transparent file folders. "You have to go back, certainly, to Windows 95 to see something where we did a broad set of things that really enabled more types of applications," Gates said at the preview. | ||

A beta containing about 1/3 of the planned functionality should arrive within the next couple months.

#3, The final GUI hasn't been shown yet - they're waiting like they did with XP. They didn't show off the new GUI in XP (well, it was really more of an overhaul) until beta two shipped. It seems like I heard Longhorn's new GUI will be in beta one, but I might be wrong - it may very well be later in the developmeny cycle until it is released.

| Ok, WinFS was cut and will be available for free later on and NGSCB was scaled back... what else has been cut? |

These are established features as documented at PDC/WinHEC (and some other announcements/conferences) and on MSDN. There are also MS blogs that discuss these technologies.
As Todd said, the final GUI has not been shown and is not likely to be shown until the last beta or the Release Candidate stage (this is standard operating procedure). In terms of looks, ignore that until later, only look to screenshots and presentations for some functional concepts (like virtual folders), keeping in mind that even the exact way the functionality works in Alpha builds that were shown could change by beta or final. At best, the current GUI is an approximation of the unaccelerated/partially accelerated tier(s), but the still only a placeholder. Glitch-free comes from kernel scheduling improvements and the new "Longhorn" driver model (and from some of the work done for the Media Center Edition OSes). Testing on this has been ongoing for a while (at least 2 years) and the driver model was locked down and made available to hardware vendors in the WinHEC build that shipped a few months ago. A few other things I forgot to mention was the "Metro" print path basically replacing GDI for printing (though GDI printers are still supported), a new color management infrastructure, improvements for domain-less networking, managed code support for user-mode drivers, integrated device syncing architecture, XBOX 360 controller compatibility (new input APIs). Some of the system (hardware) management capabilities build off of new hardware management standards, like WS-Management, which hardware vendors will build into their systems. This will allow for remote systems management (remote boot, imaging, etc.) regardless of the OS and w/o having to support multiple hardware vendor-specific management protocols as is done today. There's also support for hardware virtualization (Intel and AMD will have this in future CPUs), further optimization for multicore CPUs, and Services for Unix will likely be integrated back into the main OS distribution as it currently is with Windows Server 2003 R2.
