Controversy erupts over Sony press conference | |

The past 24 hours have been an emotional roller coaster ride for game fans anxiously waiting the PS3. At its press conference Sony thrilled the crowd with videos that definitely said "next generation". To an audience eagerly hoping to be blown away it was like a nuclear bomb went off and they ate it up. It was a powerful shot across the bow of the other contenders in the escalating console wars, but was it real? Before sunrise today a spark of doubt was smoldering. It caught fire by the end of the day. In the midst of the storm brewing this morning a poster identifying himself as Epic`s Mark Rein posted to the Voodooextreme forums talking about the videos seen at the conference. While he did preface his comments saying that everything he saw looked perfectly achievable, he clearly said that he had seen the three or four times during rehearsals and only Sony first-party, Epic and EA demos were running in real-time on the PS3. | ||

| TL--maybe they would give you a CD and you could reformat your Mac and play it on there, since that's what they're using for the interactive demos. ;) |

| Everything is Vapourware until a release comes out, I guess some press will be eating there words if the PS3 does show off visuals like that. |

| There is no controversy. Sony was perfectly forthright about what was ingame and what was not. And Microsoft mostly showed pre-rendered scenes as well. (The only problem of course being that MS's prerendered scenes looked virtually equivalent with CURRENT IN-GAME visuals, and they need developers to have their games prepared in 5 months.) Otherwise, isn't it more problematic that both companies use pre-rendered scenes, one a significiant improvement and the other not so significant an improvement, but Microsoft has less than 5 months to finalize their product and games from developers while Sony has a full year? |

| I would have expected more from you, sodajerk. The Sony videos were much better, yes, and the hardware does appear to be superior (although it should be pointed out that the 2.18 TFLOP figure appears to have been generated from a false value of a Cell running at 3.8 GHz rather than the 3.2 on the spec sheet). But there is a huge difference between the content Sony showed compared to what Microsoft showed in terms of what was in-game... and reading the major gaming sites, I'm definitely not the only one that feels that way. And, as many have pointed out, this isn't the first time Sony has done this. You are right, though--Sony is not as close to launch, so it's not really surprising that we're not seeing much in terms of actual content at this point, although the lack of mention of any online effort or even a demo of such functionality seems like either a well-guarded secret or a problem in the Sony camp. |

| I'm starting to wonder if there's more than one person posting as sodajerk... in the past, "he" at least occasionally had some constructive criticisms, but most of the time lately they just seem to be more like trolling posts. |

bluvg, your post is incoherent. There is a huge difference between what Sony showed and MS showed. Sony's is better. Both were largely not ingame. What does the past have to do with it, and what did Sony do? They didn't lie. I've seen posts from E3 within minutes of the presentation that had people asking Sony reps: what was ingame what was not. They were perfectly honest. So where's the problem. Both companies did the same thing; at least Sony's demoes were actually running on the right hardware. Sony's ingame and rendered content looked better than Microsoft's content. Sony has been truthful about what was rendered and what was not. Sony has a full year to continue work; MS has to finish up in the next few months.
As for Sony's online service: So.... Sony isn't allowed to keep a secret? They aren't allowed to still be developing something a year away? Isn't it a bigger problem that at best MS has 4 months but they still don't have a clear message about HD media, backwards compatibility, MC functionality, compatibility with other CE devices, etc... particularly when they are blabbering about these things despite it being entirely unclear. Brian, as usual, you can't attack my statements so you attack me. Pretty pathetic for a site admin. |

Of course their movie was better than MS's real time. "Both were largely not ingame." WRONG again. MS's was MOSTLY ingame, but on alph dev hardware. IN FACT, MS had their demos in true alph Xbox 360 dev kits, not movies. Xbox 360 games on the floor for users to play. Sony did not. But they gave the public what "appeared" to be REAL TIME footage of games, (Killzone 1 for example), but final production looked nowhere near the quality of the E3 presentation. While it's not a LIE, it sure is deceiving and marketing. They did it again with E3 2005. Everything I have seen has been posted as no comment. However, developers of the Sony games for E3 2005 have come out and said that not all their footage was real time. "So where's the problem. Both companies did the same thing; at least Sony's demoes were actually running on the right hardware." No they were not. The right hardware isn't known, nor will be complete until spring of 06. "Sony's ingame and rendered content looked better than Microsoft's content." Sony's MOVIE/CGI looked better than MS' live alpha kit demos running at 30% of the final specs. "Sony has been truthful about what was rendered and what was not." No they have not. "Sony has a full year to continue work; MS has to finish up in the next few months." | You said it better than I, Brian. I really don't see how my post was "incoherent" when it simply states what nearly everyone else is saying in forums across the 'net--the 360 stuff was largely in-game, and the PS3 was largely movie material, and that this is clear from the trailers. Hey, I'm not saying that the PS3 games can't look better than the 360's, but it's just that based on what we've seen thus far, no one with an unbiased mind can already make that conclusion because there is simply no evidence that the actual in-game PS3 content will look like the movies they showed at E3. Yes, the machine may be capable of those graphics, but certainly the 360 could also play back movie content of the same quality... and this was Sony's tactic last time--to show what the machine could do, not what we'll actually see in games. If the games actually look that, then that's awesome for Sony and bad news for MS. You can say whatever you want, but the demo analysis out there for everyone to read is not coming to that conclusion, save for that of two kinds of people--either those biased towards Sony, or those biased against MS. It's quite clear in which camp you sit. |
