Microsoft is under attack by a bevy of competitors. But is the software giant really at its "most vulnerable moment in history"? In the second part of our report we examine how Microsoft hopes to beat its rivals. Microsoft has plenty of headaches. A raft of companies is newly emboldened to challenge the software giant in every market: music, messaging, mobile phones and more. "Open source" projects - developed by legions of volunteers - undermine the firm's business model. To make things worse Microsoft's developers are struggling to close the security holes in their software. And as long as consumers don't trust the Microsoft world, they are unlikely to buy into the digital lifestyle vision of company founder Bill Gates. | ||

#2: because I like to bait people like you. And I (on this forum) commended MS for something a week or three ago so I do have positive things to say now & then. Might have been the Gates Foundations work. Seriously, I've answered this before. Maybe I like being the anti-propaganda to the MS FUD machine. Maybe I like to tease people who would fall to their knees if they happened across Bill Gates in the street. Besides, this place would be pretty boring if everyone here was a Parkkkkkker. You want a site dedicated to MS buttkissers? Make your own. And I do use Windows, every single day. My opinions are just as valid as the next guy's, whether you agree with them or not. I've just seen too much crap over the past 17 years from MS that I am admittedly very jaded about their business methods and ethics. MS never personally screwed me in any way, but I don't like how they operate.
#4: what was that quote again, something about those who don't pay attention to history are doomed to repeat it? I don't need to 'defend' my comments, and as I've said before, even if I did I would be dismissed out of hand. Unless you've been living on the Moon for the past 10 years, the press in general has pumped out story after story about my points #1, 2, 3 and 4. Point 99 was just a gag that plays off of the MS 'Innovation' mantra, when everyone knows that these days MS cherrypicks technologies created by others. No, I can't read MS' mind, but I can pay attention and see what is in front of my face. |

#6: Yep, and they were just as guilty of being evil back then. But they changed or rather, were made to change. Now they aren't as evil, or have mastered how to keep their evil deeds out of the press. I suspect the former. This is something MS needs loads of work on, as their every mis-step (and that train's never late) is instantly broadcast around the world so wags like me can crap on them. IBM is not the player in personal computing they once were. They, unlike MS, do not have the power to change desktop computing to their advantage and everyone else's detriment. That's not to say that IBM wouldn't abuse their position if they had MS's, just another reminder that absolute power corrupts absolutely. I don't remember dismissing anyone, but some deserve it *cough*Parkker/LinuxIsTheft/NotParkker*cough*. You're polite and articulate, so I take you much more seriously than most here.

1. Continue to think LONG TERM 2. Steady constant improvement (eventually your competition will either give out or trip and fall) 3. Have its customers devalue their intellectual property (by making it open source) until they go bankrupt |

LOL. Do you even know the first thing about business or IBM or how the world works? IBM hasn't changed. They STILL have the "sell hardware and services" mantra that they've had for decades now. Linux just happens to play into that by providing free slave labor for IBM to exploit. |

| #9: I think you've gone off-track. I said that IBM has changed as far as them being an evil monopolist is concerned. IBM is more than welcome to sell their hardware & services. And I think you have it backward as far as slave labour goes. IBM is providing significant labour itself in the form of Linux programmers to benefit itself as well as the Linux community, not the other way around. |
