Microsoft: 'Trusted Windows' still coming, trust us | |

After nearly a decade, Microsoft's vision for how to protect especially sensitive information within Windows remains largely that--a vision. For years, the software giant has promised to deliver a secure way to shuttle around key bits of information. Once known as Palladium and more recently dubbed the Next Generation Secure Computing Base, or NGSCB, the approach was once a key part of Longhorn, the next version of Windows. Although the first piece of that is arriving in Longhorn, it's only a thin sliver of what Microsoft has been working toward since describing its idea of "trusted Windows" a decade ago. In the next version of Windows, which Microsoft chairman Bill Gates will show off on Monday at a company sponsored conference, Microsoft will use the concepts of NGSCB to ensure that Windows-based machines start up without interference. The primary benefit of such an approach is that if a laptop is lost or stolen, the data can't be accessed simply by booting the machine up using another operating system. | ||

It was so widely rejected because, among other reasons, it brought nothing to the table for users -- despite MS' usual blather about the consumer. It was all about control for rights-holders. Nobody in the user community saw much good for themselves, but everyone immediately saw the bad. Plus, you had to upgrade your gear. Yeah, everyone run out and buy a new PC so that you can do less with it than you could before. This kind of scheme will only succeed if foisted on the public by MS & Intel, and I believe it is slowly heading in that direction. There was enough of an initial outcry that forced them to shelve the plans for a few years, but they will try again. The prize is just too valuable to give up.

| #3: you know exactly whom I'm referring to: RIAA, MPAA, BSA. The problem is that, while you say that the DRM can be user-disabled, what's to stop Windows from freaking out and putting the system into 'unsafe' mode, or some such? Applications that you need to access the data will refuse to comply with the chip disabled. Sure, you can 'choose' to not use the chip, just be prepared to 'choose' not to use your PC in the same breath. And forgive me for not putting any faith in MS when they say that, well yes this tech COULD be used for nastiness on our part, but trust us -- we won't. The thin end of the wedge can be a real doozy. Get everyone hooked on fairly non-obtrusive Palladium nonsense, then when critical mass is reached, flip the switch. |
