In its push to make more advertising dollars from Internet services, Microsoft is taking a new tack: It's hoping to persuade users to spread the branded word themselves.
The latest version of Microsoft Corp.'s instant messaging product, released Wednesday after several months in test form, gives users the option of downloading free "theme packs" - including backgrounds, emoticons and other graphics - built around an advertising campaign.
Microsoft also offers free theme packs not linked to advertising, and others that people pay a small amount for.
The world's largest software maker is launching the program with ad campaigns from sportswear maker Adidas and soft-drink maker Sprite.
