Firefox improves pop-up ad blocking | |

The Mozilla Foundation has developed a beta patch for the Firefox browser that it claims improves the blocking of pop-up ads. The popular open-source browser already contains a pop-up blocker by default, but this does not handle pop-ups launched by plug-ins such as Flash and Java. Mozilla employee Asa Dotzler wrote in his blog last week that Mozilla developers are responding to the increasing number of advertisers that are using plug-ins to launch pop-up ads. "A lot of people have been reporting a new breed of pop-ups on the Web," Dotzler said. "This increasing menace is rooted in the pop-up capabilities of plug-ins like Flash and Java. If you're seeing pop-ups and pop-unders, you're probably visiting sites that have Flash or other plug-ins and those plug-ins are being exploited by advertisers to abuse you with annoying pop-ups and pop-unders." | ||

Have they addressed a vulnerability that has been detected in Mozilla Suite and Firefox that could be exploited by an attacker to access sensitive user data. The problem lies in the JavaScript engine of these applications and can be exploited to access parts of the content of the memory used by the browser, which could contain sensitive user data.
This vulnerability is confirmed in Mozilla 1.7.6 and Firefox 1.0.1 and 1.0.2, although other versions could also be affected. Until a patch is released, a temporary solution is to disable the JavaScript support, although this preventive measure could affect the functioning of some web pages or may prevent them from being correctly displayed. Firefox 1.0.3 is coming soon to fix this and the other hidden security deficiencies.
Dont worry there will not be a patch but a complete download to keep inflating the download numbers. I wonder if the windows registry problem will be fixed and why the developers dont use an msi to install it. This has to be the most insecure app ever made, I think well over 30 major security deficiencies since 1.0 was launched and the open-sores fanboys advocte it's use for enhanced security. What a joke. |

#3, Not quite the same perspective...I posted as I had just received two security alerts in reference to this BUG and one more for the Linuces [not related, but certainly important], as I was reading and thought it significant enough to share with those following FF and Moz - as well as for those using it. I did not post to counter a new PU feature in FF, or diminish its potential benefit, but to perhaps help users of all browsers that may not have access to some of the more reliable paid subscription security resources as some do [CVE, CVP, et al]. The post does underscore the absolute import of remaining objective and making informed personal usage decisions and even more so, information provided to those in our profession that we support. Trumpeting the superiority of one technology over another is not the goal, but providing accurate information supporting informed choices is and should not be sacrificed regardless of how passionately one may support one source of technology over another. #3, I would not paint with such a broad brush - the results are rarely positive. |
