It is always interesting to hear how this or that user, group, or company is "breaking" Microsoft. Yet, quarter after quarter, Microsoft publishes record revenues and earnings plus 90%+ market penetration in its core software products and ever deeper penetration into the new markets that it has taken on.
Laughable is the author's specific reference to an instance that is "circumventing" Microsoft. The author points us to a company named Salesforce.com that provides a product that is accessed completely on line. This is supposedly an instance where the underlying OS and browser can be any companies.
Of course, the author is wrong. First of all, Salesforce.com sells a product known as CRM or Customer Resource Managment software. This software is designed to better coordinate the sales efforts of a company's sales force. Yet, the author fails to mention that the company offers a non on line product as well. And, PC Magazine points out, "As much as we liked salesforce.com, it lacks a few features we'd like to see in a future edition. You can't create recurring appointments in the calendar in the application itself; you have to use the Outlook plug-in." In other words, you have to access the product running Windows because if you want to keep your appointment book you have to be running Office which only runs on Windows. Although I do not know this particular company's CRM product well, I suspect that it is probably best viewed using IE, too!
Hey, if I could find the above information with a few clicks of the mouse in MSN search why didn't the bone head that wrote the article also find the same information? Or did he, and hoped that no one would dig a little to see if he was credible?
