Microsoft's Key Windows Architect Defects To Google | |

According to Microsoft Watch, Mark Lucovsky, one of Microsoft's key Windows architects, has defected to Google. A 16-year Microsoft veteran, Lucovsky was one of a handful of "Distinguished Engineers" at Microsoft. He is credited as one of the core dozen engineers that came from Digital Equipment Corp. to Microsoft and built the Windows NT operating system. He was charged with building the Windows NT executive, kernel, Win32 run-time and other key elements of the operating system. NT was the precursor to Windows Server. Mark Lucovsky recently said I am not sure I believe anymore, that Microsoft "knows how to ship software". | ||

It almost seems like this guy does not know what he is talking about. How can you compare a web site to and operation system that you have to buy?
If MS made changes to your OS without telling you, how would you react? Maybe he has some super windows update idea that us little mortals can't conceive. |

He's subscribing <again> to the belief that all any one of us needs, or "should" have is a terminal and we should access our SW via their client.
Netscape subscribed to the same nonsense and lost their backsides. "it's the platform, stupid..." comes ot mind and using the platform to launch and support an increasingly powerful set of experiences. "it's about ownership, within a society that has as its foundation, principles based upon the right of the individual to own and dispose of property" Purely browser based apps are fine - so long as one may choose to run them on "their" own platform. Very rich experiences that interact with other applications and data stores across the public networks and the Internet are even better. Google has just signed its own death warrant - unless all that is developed are widgets that one may choose to install upon one's desktop or as part of one's platform. "The Grid just isn't there yet, and when it is, we'd do well to "own" our end of it less we be enslaved." |

#2 maybe i'm a little dense but i read the link to Lucovsky's blog too and i get a different meaning.
basically he seems to be saying what i feel any ms watcher knows and that is that ms is no longer a nimble company making new software for new markets. rather, ms is a fortune 500 company cranking out dull products for maximal profit. that is why my ms stock has gone nowhere since the release of win xp. the market knows that this is a well run company making large profits on only two basic pieces of software. had i bought apple instead - now that would have been smart! |

#4 I could swear that you yourself have preached the same idea in the past, even claiming that Microsoft's main competitor is not any other OS or application but rather the Internet itself. i.e. If clients can access all their applications via a "browser" or "thin client" or "smart client" or "<insert next latest buzzword> client" then the underlying OS becomes irrelevant - something that Microsoft does not ever want to occur! I think sodablue made the same claim and if this site had a better search I'd try looking it up (I'm too lazy to see if Google has it cached).
In any case, the terminal pc idea is one that has been shared by many different companies for at least the last 20 years, the problem has always been that we haven't quite been ready for it and jumping the gun can be costly. Even now I'd say that we're not ready for it - maybe in 5 years - maybe in 10 - I guess it depends on how things go. In regards to Mr. Lucovsky, who achieved so much at Microsoft, perhaps he just wanted to try something new. I wish him the best at Google and look forward to what input he will have there. |

Oldog: Not to be contrary, but Microsoft is continuously pushing itself into newer markets, and a lot of them are starting to come up with some actual proffit (MSN just started making a proffit last year). You have the PocketPC which is outselling Palm devices, TabletPCs, and of course, the X-Box division.
There are many many other markets Microsoft has entered, it just takes time to start earning proffit in them. |

| #9, It's both at once and that is the point I'm making - it is not restricted to the browser as we know it and not limited to one desktop, device or network.... it is a combination of very flexible components working together. |

jjoelc - Heh. It's interesting. We've got people today promoting Stalinist philosophies in the name of "freedom". I'm not surprised to see someone attacking Capitalism as Communist.
