Old Microsoft ties to new Google feature | |

Google, the "Brad and Jen" of the Internet industry, caused a commotion in the blogosphere and among Web veterans last week with the release of a toolbar feature that inserts hyperlinks in Web pages. Parallels were quickly drawn to Microsoft's Smart Tag technology, which was yanked in Internet Explorer years ago for trust and trademark issues. Now it is circulating that the key employee behind Google's autolinking feature, called AutoLink, also had a hand in developing Microsoft's Smart Tags. Jeff Reynar, former Microsoft product manager and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, currently works as a product manager at Google. His interests lie in statistical natural-language processing, a key facet of Web search. | ||

Microsoft had created a meta tag for IE that disabled smart tags: <meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE">. Does anyone know if Google supports this, or something like this, so that designers can disable it for their sites?

First, it arguably violates copyright.
Second, if I design a site to present information, smart tags added by some third party disrupt the presentation, making it less effective, which harms my client. |

The user would not be changing the page. Microsoft or Google would. And their changes would violate copyright.

as i said last week, the msft haters will show their blatant hypocrisy by not bashing google when google attempts the same thing msft attempted.
halcyon has been called out for what he is. bigot. ------------- also, halcyon says "Should they?" Of course they should. cupsdell was talking about META tags, which are to protect the OWNER of the content. You are so off base that you are still talking about the end user. |

Question: "From what?" Answer: "is only changing the experience of the user that installs the add-on" To a content producer, "changing the experience of the user" is everything. Do you really think General Electric wants autolinks to Siemens on their homepage? It is EQUIVALENT to changing the content. |
