Microsoft Xbox emerging as a viable business | |

Strong sales of the Xbox during the holidays and a widely-expected successor to it this year are making it easier for Microsoft Corp. to make the case that its video games business will help drive growth. After sinking an estimated $2 billion into the Xbox, the world's largest software maker said on Thursday its Home and Entertainment division, which includes Xbox, reached profitability on an operating basis for the first time since development of the video game machine began about 5 years ago. Microsoft said Xbox revenue increased 20 percent in the last three months of 2004 due to the introduction of "Halo 2", the successor to the best-selling Xbox game. The Home and Entertainment division reported an operating profit of $84 million on revenue of $1.41 billion, which grew 11 percent. | ||

| Don't you guys even read the Ms press releases? The unit is going back into the red until 2007 and the growth was mainly from halo 2, which, like it's predecessor, halo, triggered massive growth when it was released. My point : the growth isn't sustained as evidence over the x-box's life time has proved. |

No, not really. Is it amazing that Airbus sold just 25 A380s to Singapore Air, and they aren't even available yet, for $8.6 billion... over 1300% as much revenue as all the Halos combined over the last 3 years? No. Is it amazing that Allen Iverson averages 29.1 pts per game while Peyton Manning only averages 18.375 pts per game? No. What is amazing is, that for all your jumping on Apple about their number of downloads, you don't seem to mind the fact that Microsoft and almost every single WMA store is completely afraid of releasing ANY download numbers? It's amazing that when you compare Apple's iTMS you can't compare them to another company in the same field. It's amazing that you feel compelled to mention iTMS in a completely unrelated post. It's also interesting that you continue to hide behind multiple identities, Parker... scratch that. It's not interesting at all. Telling, but not interesting... nevermind amazing. What you guys are forgetting is that MSFT makes ~$15 for each copy of Halo2, or 30%. Where apple makes $0.02 or 2%. Which one sounds like the sustainable business?
sodajerk, apple is not successful in music. You say that with the same mouth that says MSFT isn't successful with xbox because it isn't PROFITABLE. Well, neither is itunes. Oh, but you want to add ipod in with it? Fine, but make sure and add Windows in when you consider MSFT. |

The one which has been and continues to be profitable. "sodajerk, apple is not successful in music." Yes, they are. You say that without thinking: "I'm a complete retard if I say Apple is not successful in the digitial music biz"? No one is going to agree with you that Apple isn't successful. "You say that with the same mouth that says MSFT isn't successful with xbox because it isn't PROFITABLE. " No, I say that with the same mouth attached to the body with the BRAIN which knows that out of 10s of stores Apple is killing ALL of them and is making, and has been making for 4 quarters, a slight profit, while almost every other store has mounting losses, quarter after quarter. Likewise, I call XBox a failure for having only slightly better marketshare than a company which makes great profits... for being the only non-profitable player in a 3 company market... for having 1/4 the marketshare of the market leader. Etc... "Well, neither is itunes." Yes, it is. iTunes has been profitable for a year now. "Oh, but you want to add ipod in with it?" No, I wasn't thinking of it. I continue to ask: what the FCK does Apple or iTunes have to do with the XBox? Why are the two of you so freakin' obsessed?
