Following weeks of rumors and media hype, Apple announced its newest line of products at Tuesday's Macworld Expo. For once, it seems the frenzy leading up to Apple's main event was on target, with the company offering a bevy of new products, several of which had been predicted by various Apple rumor sites. Much of the attention has focused on two key bargain products--the Mac Mini and iPod Shuffle--with which Apple hopes to woo cost-conscious shoppers and potential Windows-to-Mac "switchers." The iPod shuffle....maybe. The no screen idea I don't really like, but the concept of randomness and shuffle play only is the point (plus no screen = lower cost). At only $99 for 512mb and direct USB connect with no wires/dock....OK, I might go for it if I was in the market. Plus, I can get ipod chic for about $100.
Mac mini....NO WAY. 1) Switch all my apps to Mac....nope. 2) $499....OK, but upgrade from 256 to 512mb RAM, +$75, 256 to 1gb RAM, +$425 (!!!!!!), no keyboard or mouse (add for $58, wired, $99 for Bluetooth, plus Bluetooth card $50), 40g to 80gb hard drive, +$50), suddenly we're at over $700..................? I fail to see what these products would offer me that other solutions are lacking. I can get all of the functionality (more actually, since people still code for Windows) of the mini Mac on a PC.
I don't like the idea of the iPod Shuffle for the exact same reasons I didn't look at other flash based players. The storage capacity is paltry at best. I like being able to haul around most of my CD collection with me on a 20GB hard drive based player with an LCD so I can find out what's playing and if I feel like listening to a certain song I can select it quickly and easily. The price of the larger iPod shuffle is about what I paid for my Creative 20GB Nomad MX player last month. Granted, mine is a refurb sold by Creative on Ebay. But I got the full warranty on the player and I've had no problems with it. |

Sure. If one of thier products fits a need I have then I'll buy it. Mac/PC Religeon doesn't really exist with me. I use and buy both when it suits me.
Now all I need is a portable spell checker :) TL |

Lets see... get that mini mac for $499 and then a monitor, mouse, keyboard.
OR I can get a Dell (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_dp_desktop1_1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs) with P4 2.8Ghz (533fsb), 512MB ram, 40GB HD, 19" CRT or 15" Flat, CDRW+DVD for $578 Personally I'll take the Dell. As far as the Shuffle... I'm not obsessed with music like the rest of the world I guess but I don't get all hot and bothered about lugging around music but if I really wanted to there are plenty of portable players, even Dell has one, that I can use and not be tied into iTunes. The iPod is cool and so is the shuffle don't get me wrong... but I'm not camping outside my local apple retailer with baited breath. Some people like the Fads and I guess they can spend their money however they want... but I still will choose MS over Mac... hell they still ship out single button, non-wheel mice with their G5's for the love of all that is holy! For them it isn't functionality and productivity, it's good looks. This has been proven with their new OS which is just now getting to maturity functionally and that GOD FOR SAKEN MOUSE <cough>better than they hockey puck though</cough> |

Ah, yes. Glad to see the "Apple is dead" comments are alive and well. And just as wrong as ever.
Apple has been 'verbally' dead for 20 years now. I guess they are the cockroaches of the computer industry. The just won't die! |
