Opinion: The security software business is better off without Microsoft competing, but are we? Look for the company to proceed guardedly into this market.Back in DOS 5.0, Microsoft included an anti-virus scanner (a licensed version of Central Point's PC Tools scanner). That was Microsoft's last entry into the anti-malware market with a real product, back in an era when viruses generally needed floppy disks to spread. That scanner didn't even make it to DOS 6.0, and here we are, well over a decade later, and things have changed in almost every way. | ||

Here's my only problem with all this.
Microsoft has too many vested interests. Every malware to be removed will probably have to be approved by committee. I can hear it already... "Can we remove this without upsetting one of our vendors, customers, advertising partners, etc..." Dedicated security companies have no such interests. They are there to remove malware, period. Where it comes from is of no interest to them. The question is can Microsoft make and support an effective tool despite itself? TL |

I think its possible TL. While I'm sure they won't want to upset those who provide border-line spyware I'm also just as sure that they want to keep their OEM's happy.
My guess is with MS stopping spyware out of the box, providers of spyware, be they friends of MS or not, will change their business practices. I'm sure MS will create a standard for categorizing software as spyware and is a company wants to stay off the list MS will simply tell them to abide by the rules. I wouldn't be surprised if MS is slower at cleaning off software from certain vendors but at this point everybody is sick of spyware and I'm sure MS knows that Apple is looking better and better for those who can barely use their 3 day old machines. |

spyware is the real deal for ms. i have yet to use someone else’s computer not littered with garbage.
ms is in damage control with this one. spyware actually threatens ms’ entire business model. follow the logic spyware invades the average computer making it run sloooow. if you are joe schmo average computer user or especially a business user you have no desire to use spyware removal tools or for that matter any other program to keep your os running (i.e. a virus program). you don’t get why it’s necessary. why not a distributed business model when huge bandwith becomes the norm. who cares what os it is. why bother with this crap. rent your os and apps too using only what you need when you need it. i predict that the next iteration of windows will silently incorporate all of these features so that the average guy won’t need to think about these things. if it doesn’t ms will be out of biz. pity ms when the next internet comes along. |

The problem is getting worse, and may actually be getting beyond the ability of automated tools.
Even after running all the major removal tools, performing manual removals and registry edits, and every other trick available, about half the time we end up re-imaging the users computer. 2-3 support hours down the drain. It's beyond getting worse out there. It's downright ugly. |
