Despite suffering technical glitches that prompted jokes and guffaws, Bill Gates promised Wednesday that Microsoft Corp. would help millions of consumers stay seamlessly plugged into a world of digital music, movies, video games and television shows. During a demonstration of digital photography with a soon-to-be-released Nikon camera, a Windows Media Center PC froze and wouldn't respond to Gates' pushing of the remote control. | ||

It only locked up, but they thought it would also be clever to have a pile of remotes and they had no clue which was the right one. When they got the right one, it didn't work. They didn't have internet access initially and had to skip portions of the demo. Conan pointed out that Microsoft sent him a PMC but with ZERO software so he wasn't able to use it. The XBox game was performing horribly.
Not only was it glitch filled, it was simply boring and presented nothing new or interesting whatsoever. |

Kinda wierd how only Conan's game went slowly... game looked... semi-interesting. |

Guys, the Xbox game was barely alpha. Look cool nonetheless.
The slide show glitch was just stupid... probably dead batteries in the remote or something equally inane. The internet access was just slow... the page actually finished loading soon after the guy giving the demo gave up and moved on. |

poke fun all you want, but that won't help MSFT's competitors. MSFT is fielding an amazing product lineup and they are shining brightly at CES.
partnership with tivo for portable video partnership with sirius for live video to cars/handhelds/pcs partnership with mtv for content everywhere cool exclusive xbox games, after huge successes in 2004 msntv 2 antivirus and antispyware solutions (free or paid) tons of new WMA and WMV devices lots of new windows phones across the globe msn direct watches (yawn) and alarm clocks (a natural remote interface for your pc) and we still get to look forward to xbox2 late this year, and big announcements around the use of msn video and msn music |

#10, XBOX games, like any software, still have their own application-specific code. Some part of that code apparently has a memory leak which caused the XBOX to run out of available system memory.
Coding to an API won't prevent crashes (or leaks in this case). Windows desktop applications (and applications for other OSes) are coded to the platform's APIs, yet these apps crash, leak memory, and can cause the system to halt in the worse case. The XBOX is no different from any other computer in this respect. |

The game was running on an XBOX, not MCE. I'd wager that it was running on a dev XBOX but can't confirm that. Technically, the out of memory condition was trapped by the OS which is why you saw the error message output.
I don't have enough info to know how recoverable this type of condition is. A reset of the XBOX would've allowed them to continue the demo, but if they were running a dev box, maybe taking that time to capture the error data is more useful, especially given time constraints for the presentation, and that the attendees would likely get to see/play the game at MS' booth. |

The dev "wrote" and used a custom BOS error screen - it was an unauthorized screen.
XBox does not have one of this nature by default. The Dev showed very bad form in doing so. |
