How does this affect the average Athlon-64 user.
What will one need to actually use it.
Does standard software still install and run on the 64-bit version?

The biggest problem is drivers availability but my guess is that by the time the OS will ship more and more vendors will have them ready, at least I hope so.

Drivers is a big problem, but also the fact that most software is made to run on 32 bit platforms and can't take advantage of the benefits of 64 bit.

TechLarry: Windows XP 64-bits runs great on an Athlon 64 system. Start up and switching programs was much faster. I stopped using it only because of a lack of a cheap/free 64-bit antivirus program.
64-bit Windows XP beta has been available for anyone to download for some time.
A 360 day trial version is available at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/upgrade.mspx
Install it on a different hard drive than your main drive and “get 'er done.”
Mr. Dee: With Athlon 64 2800+ processors selling for $125 why would you want to use a lame Celeron to run Windows XP 64-bit? Get a processor with some guts.

"lack of a cheap/free 64-bit antivirus program"
I'm amazed at all the money spent on antivirus programs, by GEEKS. Why? I have NEVER installed an antivirus program for my home pc's. To my knowledge, I've never had a single problem.

Believe it or not, but contrary to popular belief, many GEEKS have girlfriends, friends and family and might even (dont freak out) let them use their computer -UNSUPERVISED- once in a while.

mooresa56... install almost any of the "free" emoticons or software offered up in popup ads on this site and you'll get spyware - almost as good as a virus. Most AV vendors now describe them as a virus.
I still can't figure out why ActiveWin isn't more proactive against the ad servers they use and the crap ads this site serves. It really looks bad on a tech site that promotes this kind of crap. Wonder why? Oh! Money! That's right.

Well - let's see - you need something to host a website - Oh! Money! That's right...

Windows x64/IA64 can also run 32-bit code. Viruses don't need to take advantage of 64-bit addressing to pose a threat.

#14,
I'm glad you brought that up. I've been wanting too, but I've been harping on ActiveWin for it's 'choices' in advertising regarding this and I thought it was someone elses turn.
I've had to RE-IMAGE peoples computers that were so heavily infected with Spyware from the Smiley Central crap we couldn't resurrect them.

#15,
Promoting Spyware, or rogue spyware removal utilities, is not the way to make friends and gain readers.
Spyware is the scurge of computing these days. It's got EVERYONE pissed off, it's the #1 reason for calls to help desks, and personally it takes up 30-40% of my support time now.
Making money can be done in a good manner or an evil manner. One has choices.

I have to defend mooresa56 to say that I've never had AV on my home machine, either, although I do run a virus check at housecall.trendmicro.com once a month or so just to make sure. I've never been affected by a virus personally, but it's certainly not an approach I'd recommend... especially since I let my girlfriend use my machine a couple weeks ago. Instant spyware infection... and a big mess to clean up.
I'm the type that is inclined to reinstall altogether if there has been an infection (just to be on the safe side), so I was not very happy... but it would be such a hassle at this point that I just did my best to clean it up and am satisfied that it's clean. If you haven't encountered it already, though, don't rely upon Ad-Aware and the like... I've found that about half the time I still find processes running that shouldn't be there and malware entries under HKCU- or HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run.
Anyhow, I think you can still run a machine without AV, but you have to be careful.
