Microsoft's Tilt Wheel Tech Gaining Popularity | |

Microsoft has announced that its proprietary Tilt Wheel Technology is quickly becoming a standard on the desktop, and winning consumer acclaim for delivering more intuitive and efficient ways to scroll through spreadsheets and web pages. Mohit Anand, manager, home and entertainment division, Microsoft, said, "The scroll wheel with the tilt feature is highly useful for navigating large documents. Many spreadsheets and other documents cannot be seen all at once on a computer display. The ability to tool around inside them at will, steering side to side as well as up and down, makes computing not only easier but more pleasurable as well." | ||

Here is my take on the tilt wheel technology (as if anybody really cares)
I have the Wireless Elite Desktop (I consider myself elite) In a nutshell, I like the tilt wheel on the keyboard but I do not like it on the mouse. The tilt wheel on the mouse makes the scroll wheel button virtually useless. It's too hard to press. Plus, the mouse moves around when you press the srcoll wheel to the side. The keyboard on the other hand is firm on the desk and doesn't slide around when you press the scroll wheel to the side. Plus, on the keyboard, the scroll wheel does not have the button functionality, so the difficulty in pressing the button is a non-issue. The other issue I have with tilt wheel technology is whether it is really needed to begin with. I have two 19 inch flat panel monitors on my computer. Needless to say, I don't scroll horizontally very ofter. Most monitors today have large displays with high resolutions, easily able to display an entire web page or spreadsheet. I guess in conclusion, I'd rather have it than not have it, but only on the keyboard, not on the mouse. Oh and btw - I love the smooth scrolling feel. Now when I use a mouse that clicks as I scroll, it is very annoying... This post was edited by chrishedlund on Wednesday, December 08, 2004 at 11:29. |

| #1 the Logitech "feature" that you are talking about has been standard on Microsoft Mice for longer than Logitech ones! This new "tilt-wheel" technology IS different, in that you can actually push the wheel left and right instead of rolling it up and down only. But yeah what you say about the standard feature you talk about compared to the new tilt-wheel techology is right when you think about it, not so much as a revolution, but an alternative way to scroll left and right through documents. |
