Microsoft Puts Money in Windows-Linux Integrator | |

In a move dear to the hearts of conspiracy theorists, Microsoft has taken a minority position in Vintela Inc, a sister company of the SCO Group by virtue of the Canopy Group, their common investor. Not only that but Vintela's widgetry makes Microsoft's widgetry support Linux as well as Unix. And that has some people saying that it means Microsoft is going to bring out a version of Linux under its own brand name, a connection that's hard to make but there you have it. One could say, however, that the move is the closest Microsoft has even come - or possibly ever will - to owning and supporting Linux. | ||

Can we clarify that statement?
Do you mean "support" as in Microsoft building their own Linux product? Or do you mean "support" as in make Microsoft products work better with Linux-based software? The difference between the two is obviously quite large. Working here, I can tell you that we will never be releasing a version of Linux under our name, ever. Our job is Windows. We support and develop for Windows, we will continue to support and develop for Windows. However, we must for the purposes of interoperability and survival in the marketplace design our products to work better all around with the UNIX and Linux operating system environments. We recognize this task which is why we have gone out of our way devoting precious programming resouces to products such as Interix, Services for UNIX, and a much more to be released in the next few quarters. Quite the contrary, Microsoft not supporting the UNIX and Linux environments in terms of interop would be one of the worst things we could ever do. And to be clear, let me say that interoperability doesn't mean bringing our applications to the UNIX and Linux bases. This post was edited by aamendala on Sunday, November 28, 2004 at 12:13. |
